Awareness & Crime prevention
SAFETY & SECURITY AWARENESS
The Campus Safety Department is here to serve you and takes pride in its role on campus. The safety and security of students, faculty, and staff, however, is best accomplished as a team effort. Therefore, be aware of your surrounding as you move about on campus, or within campus buildings. Use the phone numbers listed below or the numbers listed on the Emergency Contact page to communicate your needs with the appropriate service providers. Also, look for announcements from campus safety regarding crime prevention classeses, e-mail alerts regarding safety and security issues, as well as other methods of awareness programs, such as student orientation.
CRIME PREVENTION
As an educational institution, our focus is on academic skill, education, and knowledge. With this in mind, the more knowledgeable you are about personal safety and security issues, the safer you will be. For example, avoid high-risk behavior such as over indulgence in alcohol, walking alone at night, and taking shortcuts through vacant lots and deserted streets. Be careful about giving out information concerning yourself, such as your phone number or where you live. Notify Campus Safety immediately on matters concerning suspicious activitity or suspicious person(s).
The Campus Safety Department is here to serve you. The Campus Safety office is located at the south end of Saint Peter Hall, and is staffed 24 hours a day throughout the year. To report a crime or emergency while you are on Main Campus, dial “5” from any college-owned telephone, or use an Emergency Call Box located near the college buildings or in the parking lots. You may also call (201) 761-7400 for a direct line to the Campus Safety Department.
PROTECTION STRATEGIES
The backbone of the Campus Safety Program is patrol, focusing on crime prevention. The scheduling of officers on foot and bicycle patrol provides the campus with both the high visibility of uniformed officers and the ability to respond quickly to any observed or reported suspicious activity.
The campus patrol officers are assigned to all shifts and are equipped with portable radios. Patrol activities incorporate random patrol for high visibility, bicycle patrol for quick response, building inspections and monitoring of pedestrian traffic, and access control within residence halls.
CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION (CCTV)
Enhancing the patrol function is a closed-circuit television system (CCTV). Numerous cameras strategically placed throughout the campus record activities on campus property and in selected areas of campus buildings. A campus safety officer assigned to the central station monitors the CCTV system 24 hours a day. By and large, as the cameras themselves are visible, they provide a deterrent to criminal activity.
PATROL ASSIGNMENTS
Several parking lots staffed with Campus Safety officers during day and evening hours provide security protection in specified areas.
The campus is actively patrolled 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week. Any student, faculty, or staff can flag down any of the campus safety officers if required. A Central Station is maintained in Saint Peter Hall, and is the communication link between the patrol posts, other campus departments, fire and police departments. The officer assigned to the central station is responsible for the telephone answering procedures, emergency response dispatching, and the monitoring of the technological systems that terminate within the console. Central station officers are trained in proper procedures for contacting police, fire and emergency medical personnel when required.
The supervisor on duty generally determines the extent of emergency service needed to remedy a given situation.
Proper notifications to emergency services that may need an immediate response will require an exact location and other pertinent details pertaining to the situation. The central station officer will then insure that all information is properly entered in the log maintained for that purpose only. Campus Safety officers assigned to the central station se patrol will answer phones courteously and offer emergency and non-emergency assistance at all times.
intrusion alarms
An electronic monitoring system is in operation throughout the campus. The system consists of intrusion alarms and motion detection equipment. In addition, the system allows authorized persons access into the building using an assigned code number. The electronic system records and subsequently documents entry time, date, and location.
Any unauthorized entry will activate the alarm, which then automatically notifies our contracted central-station alarm company. Campus Safety is notified and, if necessary, the Jersey City Police Department, Central Station, Fire Department, and E.M.S. if required.
EMERGENCY PHONE SYSTEM “DIAL 5”
A direct access emergency line is available throughout the campus when utilizing college phones. “Dial 5” on any of the more than 725 telephones in our phone system and you will be put in immediate contact with the Campus Safety Central Station. The phone will be answered immediately upon which the caller must notify the person of the exact location and the nature of the emergency.
EMERGENCY CALL BOXES
Eighteen (18) emergency call boxes are located on Campus and are activated by pushing the large, red colored emergency button. The activated call box will automatically dial the Campus Safety Office, which is operated 24 hours per day. The caller should give the reason for calling to the Campus Safety Officer; his or her location as noted on the box; and, if possible, remain at the call box until an officer arrives. The boxes are located at the entrance to Parking Lots #1, 4 & 7; walkway entrance to Parking Lot #2; Jesuit Court; Quadrangle; Pope Hall walkway; lower level of Parking Lot #3 by the Recreation Life Building and another outside of Rankin Hall; front & interior of Murray Hall; entrance to Veteran’s Court; 140 Glenwood Avenue complex; interior of Dineen Hall; as well as four boxes on the Bridge complex.
Saint Peter’s College Campus Safety Department strongly encourages each person on campus to take note of the location of the emergency push button call boxes and office locations so that immediate assistance may be obtained easily during emergencies. Please be familiar with the college and constantly be aware of your surroundings.
