peahens season comes to an end
with loss to marist in elimination game

STRATFORD, CT (May 11, 2007) - The #2 Saint Peter's College Peahens (22-23) had their 2007 season come to an end this afternoon in a 3-0 loss to the #4 Marist College Red Foxes (20-29) in an elimination at the 2007 MAAC Tournament. The Peahens could only muster three hits in the loss that ended their great run. Marist advances to the Championship Game tomorrow, have to defeat Canisius twice to win the Championship.

The game started out well for Saint Peter's as they had two on with one out, but neither runner scored. Marist jumped on the board with a single run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Marist hurler Caitlin Carpentier retired 15 straight batters until Christie Crowell hit a single in the sixth. The Red Foxes also added two insurance runs in the fifht to make the score 3-0. The Peahens could get nothing going in the seventh and fell 3-0.

Amber Phillips (8-12) took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. Carpentier pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out three Peahens and facing just three batter over the minimum.

The great season for the Peahens comes to an end and MAAC Player of the Year Julie Saporito and Michelle Casares see their collegiate careers come to end. Next season starts tomorrow and February will be here before you know it.

STRATFORD, CT (May 11, 2007) – The #2 Saint Peter’s College Peahens (22-22) lost to the #1 Canisius College Golden Griffins this morning 8-7 in a heartbreaker at the 2007 MAAC Championships. The Peahens scored four in the top of the seventh on a grand slam by Michelle Casares to take a 7-6 lead, but the Griffs got their first two runners on in the bottom of the inning and won the game on a two-run single by Kaite Miranto. The Peahens now have to play an elimination game later this afternoon, against either Marist or Niagara.
 
The Peahens started off the game well, as they plated a run in the first on an RBI single by Casares. They then added two more in the second on RBI singles by Christie Crowell and Chrissy Gannon, taking a 3-0 lead. Tricia Reingle retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced through three innings, but in the fourth Canisius found their stroke. Jess Martin and Brittany Bonetto each hit two run doubles to give the Griffs a 4-3 lead after four innings. In the fifth, Canisius scored two more to take a 6-3 advantage.
 
Courtney Piar had shutdown the Peahens from the time she entered the game in the second until the seventh. Crowell and Kristen Kinneer both hit singles to start the inning. Saporito then worked a one out walk to load the bases. Casares came to the plate and hit the first pitch she saw over the right field fence for a grand slam that gave the Peahens a 7-6 lead. Saint Peter’s continued to threaten but could not score again. The game went into the bottom of the seventh with Saint Peter’s leading 7-6.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Jenny Maheu led off with a triple to right center. Jamie Gerace then struck out, but reached first on a dropped third strike. She advanced to second on defensive indifference and the winning run was in scoring position. Miranto, the MAAC Preseason Player of Year, hit a liner just over the glove of Gannon at short. Two crossed the plate and Canisius was off to the MAAC Championship Game, winning 8-7 in dramatic fashion.
 
Reingle (7-3) pitched a complete game, allowing eight runs, six earned on nine hits, while striking out 12. Casares went 2-3 in the game with a run scored and five RBI. Crowell went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
The Peahens now have to wait for the result of the Marist/Niagara game which is going on right now to see who they play this afternoon for the second spot in the MAAC Championship Game tomorrow. This afternoon’s game will begin at approximately 3pm and can be heard live at www.redzonemedia.com.

in maac tournament history

STRATFORD, CT (May 10, 2007) – The #2 Saint Peter’s College Peahens (22-21) pulled of the greatest comeback in the MAAC Tournament history this afternoon, defeating the #3 Niagara University Purple Eagles (18-19) 13-11 in game one of the 2007 MAAC Championships at DeLuca Field in Stratford, CT. The Peahens scored 12 unanswered runs in the fifth and six innings to earn the victory. Ariana Payan’s single in the sixth drove in eventual two winning runs to break an 11-11 tie and give the Peahens their first lead of the game.
 
The game did not start out well for Saint Peter’s, as Niagara put up a four-spot in the first. Saint Peter’s got on the board in the second as Meg Papierniak knocked in MAAC Player of the Year, Julie Saporito to make the score 4-1. Niagara got the run back in the fourth to extend their advantage to 5-1. The Purple Eagles then blew the game open, plating six runs in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead. The Peahens were down to their final two outs in the bottom of the fifth, when Chrissy Gannon, named Second Team All-MAAC this morning, hit a three-run homer over the centerfield fence to make the score 11-4. Niagara was retired in order in the sixth. The Peahens then came to bat and the comeback was on.
 
With one out, Jessica LaBovick got her first collegiate hit. Payan and Crowell then each hit singles to load the bases. Niagara pitcher Trish McCrory then walked the next two batters, forcing in two runs and making the score 11-6. Starter Brook Viola re-entered the game and promptly gave up an RBI single to Saporito, 11-7. Michelle Casares then hit a two-run single and advanced to second on an error, 11-9. Tricia Reingle then hit an RBI single just out of the reach of the shortstop, 11-10. Papierniak then knocked in her second run of the game with a single, 11-11. LaBovick, batting for the second time in the sixth, was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Payan then hit a soft liner over the second base bag that scored Reingle and Papierniak, giving Saint Peter’s their first lead 13-11. In all, the Peahens sent 14 batters to the plate, 12 in a row reaching base scored nine runs on eight hits and took the lead.
 
LaBovick retired the Purple Eagles in order in the seventh, earning the victory and securing the 13-11 win. LaBovick (4-3) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs, while striking out two. Gannon had four RBI in the contest, while Casares, Papierniak and Payan each drove in two. Six Peahens had multiple hits.
 
Saint Peter’s moves on and will play tomorrow morning at 11am for a chance to advance to Saturday’s Championship Game. The game can be heard live tomorrow morning at 10am at www.redzonemedia.com.

TRUMBULL, CT (May 10, 2007) - Saint Peter's College senior third baseman Julie Saporito was named MAAC Player of the Year this morning at the annual MAAC Championships Softball Banquet. Saporito was also named to the All-MAAC First Team after hitting .397 with 14 doubles, 11 homers and 36 RBI. Saporito hit .522 in MAAC games, with 15 runs scored, five homers and 16 RBI. Junior shortstop Chrissy Gannon was named to the All-MAAC Second Team after hitting .310, scoring a team leading 33 runs, hitting five doubles, a triple and four homers. She also knocked in 12 runs. In MAAC games, Gannon hit .295. Saporito and Gannon have helped lead the Peahens to the 2007 MAAC Tournament where they will take on Niagara this afternoon at 1pm at DeLuca Field in Stratford, CT.

JERSEY CITY, NJ (May 5, 2007) – The Saint Peter’s College Peahens (21-21, 11-5 MAAC) ended their regular season this afternoon with a split of a doubleheader with the Iona College Gaels (14-21, 8-6 MAAC). The Gaels won game one 10-2, but the Peahens won the second game 7-3 to earn the #2-seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament. Saint Peter’s took advantage of four Iona errors in game two.
 
Iona struck first in game one, plating four runs in the top of the first. Saint Peter’s got on the board in the second as the Peahens loaded the bases, but could only get one across on a sacrifice fly by Jackie Cross. Iona added three runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead. Michelle Casares led off the bottom of the fourth with a homer to make the score 7-2 after four innings. The Gaels scored their eighth run in the sixth to take an 8-2 lead. Iona continued to pour it on scoring two more in the seventh to make the final score 10-2. Casares went 3-3 in the loss with a homer, while Christie Crowell went 2-4. Amber Phillips took the loss going three innings and allowing seven runs, three earned on five hits.
 
In game two the Gaels struck first once against plating three runs in the opening inning. That would be the final runs that Iona would score. Saint Peter’s scored a solo run in the first on an RBI fielder’s choice by Casares, a single run in the second on a homer by Cross and tied the game in the third on a solo shot by Julie Saporito. The Peahens then put the game away with a four spot in the fifth thanks to four errors by the Gaels. Kristen Kinneer scored the first run of the inning on an error by the third baseman on a bunt attempt. Chrissy Gannon scored when Casares reached on an error. Saporito and Casares then executed a double steal and both scored on errors by the catcher and the leftfielder to give Saint Peter’s a 7-3 lead. Iona was shutdown in the sixth and the seventh and Peahens won and earned the #2-seed in the MAAC Tournament.
 
Saporito went 3-4 in the second game with a homer and another run scored. Kinneer went 2-3 with two runs scored and Crowell went 2-3. Phillips earned the win in relief, pitching four innings and allowing no runs on three hits. Jessica LaBovick pitched the final inning of the win.

peahens clinch maac tournament berth
for first time since 2003

JERSEY CITY, NJ (April 29, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (20-20, 10-4 MAAC) clinched their first MAAC Tournament bid since the 2003 season this afternoon after sweeping a doubleheader from the Rider University Broncs (7-32, 2-10). The Peahens won game one 3-1 and clinched the playoff berth with a 10-4 win in game two. The two wins coupled with two Marist losses clinch the postseason appearance. The Peahens still have a chance to win the regular season championship with a pair of wins over Iona next Saturday along with a Canisius split against Siena. The 2007 MAAC Championships will take place on May 10-12th at DeLuca Field in Stratford, CT.

The bats came alive in game two for the Peahens as the they plated four runs in the first inning. Saporito started the scoring with an RBI single, then MIchelle Casares, Papierniak and Gable each hit RBI doubles, giving Saint Peter's a 4-0 lead. They tacked on another run in the second on an RBI single by Chrissy Gannon. Saint Peter's put the game away, scoring four times in the fifh. Casares doubled in a run, Papierniak hit a two-run single and Jackie Cross hit an RBI single. Rider scored three in the fifh, but Saint Peter's got one back on an RBI single by Saporito to make the score 10-3. Rider scored a single run in the sixth to make the final 10-4. Gannon was 3-3 with three runs scored, Saporito was 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Casares and Papierniak were each 2-4. Jessica LaBovick got the win, pitching four innings and allowing one run on four hits. Phillips got the save, pitching the final three innings.

Saint Peter's will play their final games of the season on Saturday afternoon as they host the Iona College Gaels at 1pm with the MAAC Regular Season Championship on the line. It will also be senior day for the Peahens.

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 28, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (18-20, 8-4 MAAC) went a long way towards clinching a MAAC Tournament bid this afternoon by splitting at MAAC doubleheader with the Fairfield University Stags (16-21, 5-7). The Peahens won the all important first game 3-1, but fell 2-1 in game two. Julie Saporito provided the game one offense knocking in all three runs, while the second game was a pitcher's duel that saw the two teams combine for seven hits.

Game one started just as you would script it with the Peahens scoring three runs in the first inning. With one out Kristen Kinneer singled, Chrissy Gannon walked which brought up Saporito, the front runner for MAAC Player of the Year. The senior captain lost one over the center field fence, her 10th homer to give Saint Peter's the 3-0 lead. Fairfield scored their only run in the fifth to make the final 3-1. Amber Phillips pitched a complete game five hitter allowing just one run while striking out two. Saporito was 3-4 with the homer, Kinneer was 2-4 and Ariana Payan went 2-3.

Game two was a pitcher's duel as the Peahens could only muster three hits, two in the same inning. Fairfield hit a two-run homer in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Saint Peter's crossed the plate with their only run in the sixth on an RBI double by Gannon. Jessica LaBovick pitched 5.2 strong innings after recovering from elbow tendinitis, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Peahens have the possibility of wrapping up a MAAC Tournament Bid this afternoon with a sweep of the Rider University Broncs. The MAAC doubleheader has a 1pm first-pitch at Jaroschak Field.

Peahens drop doublheader to Lions

NEW YORK, NY (April 27, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (17-19) dropped a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon to the Columbia University Lions (20-24) this afternoon, falling 3-0 and 4-3. In game one, Saint Peter's could only manage five hits and made four errors, while in game two Columbia pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the seventh.

The first game was scoreless through the first three innings, but in the fourth Columbia got on the board. The Lions scored two runs after a pair of Peahen errors. The Lions scored their third run in the sixth to make the final 3-0. Meg Papierniak and Sam Gable each went 2-3, while Sam Tempe pitched a complete game, allowing three runs, two earned on four hits.

In game two Columbia scored a solo run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Peahens tied the game in the fifth on a solo homer by Jackie Cross. The Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Saint Peter's scored a run in the fifh on an RBI double by Julie Saporito and then tied the game in the seventh on RBI single by Christie Crowell. In the seventh, Columbia scraped across the winning run on an error to take the second game 4-3. Crowell went 2-3 with an RBI, while Cross went 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Tempe gave up four runs, three earned on seven hits in game two.

The Peahens have a crucial MAAC weekend coming up as the Peahens will travel to face Fairfield on Saturday and host Rider on Sunday.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (April 24, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (17-17) split a non-conference doubleheader with the Seton Hall University Pirates (14-30) this afternoon. The Peahens won the first game 11-4, thanks to nine unearned runs and a six-run fifth, while Seton Hall took game two 6-0 taking advantage of a strong pitching perfomance.

Saint Peter's jumped right on the board in game one, scoring two in the first on an RBI fielder's choice by Michelle Casares and an RBI groundout by Meg Papierniak. Seton Hall tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the Peahens took the lead back in the third on a solo homer by Chrissy Gannon. The Pirates took their first lead at 4-3 after plating two run in the bottom of the third. Saint Peter's broke the game open in fifth, scoring six runs. Gannon reached base on an error with two outs and then the flood gates opened. Casares hit an RBI single, Jackie Cross hit a two-run single and Lhenee Riddick capped off the inning with a three-run homer, giving the Peahens a 9-4 lead. Saint Peter's added two more unearned runs in the sixth to make the final 11-4.

Christie Crowell and Kristen Kinneer each went 2-5 with a run scored. Gannon went 1-3 with an RBI and scored four runs. Casares, Papierniak and Cross each drove two runs. Sam Tempe earned the win, pitching a complete game and allowing four runs on seven hits.

In game two, the Peahens could only manage six hits and could not find the plate and fell 6-0. Crowell went 2-3 and Amber Phillips took the loss, pitching a complete game and allowing six runs on seven hits, while striking out four.

Saint Peter's played another non-conference doubleheader on Thursday as they travel to face Columbia at 3pm.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NJ (April 21, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (16-16, 7-3 MAAC) headed back to Niagara Falls this afternoon and are coming home with a doubleheader split. The Peahens deafeated the Niagara University Purple Eagles (11-13, 5-3) 8-3 in game and fell 7-0 in game two. Julie Saporito hit a three-run homer in the first game, her ninth of the season, just five away from the single season record.

Saint Peter's broke the first game open in the third inning, plating five runs. Christie Crowell got the Peahens on the board first with an RBI single. Chrissy Gannon then hit an RBI single to give Saint Peter's a 2-0. Saporito followed with three-run shot to extend the Peahens advantage to 5-0. Saint Peter's then added a single run in the fourth on Crowell's second RBI single on the game. Niagara scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to make the score 6-2. The Peahens got those runs back in the seventh, scoring a pair of unearned runs. Niagara capped the scoring in the seventh to make the final 8-3.

Crowell and Meg Papierniak each went 3-4. Crowell scored a run and knocked in two more, while Papierniak scored twice. Saporito was 2-4 with the three-run homer and a second run scored. Amber Phillips got the win, pitching a complete game and allowing three runs on 10 hits.

The Peahens could not find any offense in game two as Niagara scored a run in the second, two in the third, one in fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Saint Peter's could only muster four hits in the loss.

Saint Peter's will play a non-conference doubleheader at Seton Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

STONY BROOK, NY (April 19, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (15-15) got back on the field this afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with the Stony Brook University Seawolves (21-13). Stony Brook won the marathon opener, 3-2 in 11 innings, while the Peahens won game two 7-3. The Peahens used the long ball this afternoon, hitting five homers in the two games.

Game one, which took 2:23 to play, saw the Seawolves jump out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the third. The Peahens responded with a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Michelle Casares. The game went into extra innings, tied 1-1. Casares broke the tie with a solo homer in the ninth, but Stony Brook tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth. The Seawolves finally won the game with a run in the 11th. Casares went 4-5 in game one with a run scored and two RBI. Lhenee Riddick went 2-3. Amber Phillilps pitched 10.1 innings, allowing just three runs, two earned while scattering 12 hits.

The Peahens quickly jumped out to a lead in game two scoring twice in the first inning as Christie Crowell scored on a wild pitch and Julie Saporito hit a solo homer. Kristen Kinneer then homered in the third to extend the advantage to 3-0. Stony Brook scored a run in their half of the third to make the score 3-1, but the Peahens responded with two in the fourth on a two-run blast by Meg Papierniak. The Seawolves made the score 5-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Saint Peter's tacked on insurance run in the seventh on a two-run homer by Ariana Payan to make the score 7-2. The Seawolves got one across in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 7-3. Sam Tempe pitched a compete game, allowing three runs, two earned on eight hits, while striking out two and walking none.

The Peahens will head back to Western New York on Saturday to make-up their doubleheader with Niagara. First-pitch is 12pm.

BUFFALO, NY (April 14, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (14-14, 6-2 MAAC) lost their first MAAC games of the season this afternoon, falling at the Canisius College Golden Griffins (14-17, 3-3 MAAC) 7-0 and 6-0. The Peahens could only come up with six hits this afternoon, with Julie Saporito being the only Saint Peter's player with more than one hit on the day. The Peahens will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they play Niagara in Niagara, NY.

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ (April 11, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (14-12) dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the Monmouth University Hawks (21-8) this afternoon, losing 9-4 and 11-8. Chrissy Gannon was 4-6 in the two games this afternoon with four runs scored and an RBI.

In game one, Monmouth jumped on the board scoring four runs in the first. The Peahens responded, scoring two in the second on a two-run homer by Michelle Casares and a run in the third on a solo homer by Gannon. The Hawks continued to pound the softball, posting three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 9-3 lead. The Peahens final run came on a sacrifice fly by Casares in the seventh. Gannon was 3-4 in the game. Amber Phillips took the loss pitching the first three innings.

In game two, the Saint Peter's scored first, plating three in the first on an RBI double by Kristen Kinneer, an RBI single by Julie Saporito and an RBI walk by Meg Papierniak. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the innings, scoring three runs to tie the game. The Peahens then erupted for five runs in the second. Casares hit a two-run single, Papierniak hit an RBI groundout and Jackie Cross hit a two-run single to give Saint Peter's an 8-3 lead. Monmouth got two back in the bottom of the third and then scored six runs in the sixth to take the lead and win the game 11-8. Sam Tempe took the loss, pitching a complete game. Kinneer went 2-4 with two runs scored and RBI, while Christie Crowell went 2-5 with a run scored.

The Peahens will get back into MAAC action this weekend as they travel to Buffalo to face Canisius on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday, weather permitting.

EDISON, NJ (April 9, 2007) - Peahens Julie Saporito and Jessica LaBovick earned MAAC Weekly Honors for their performances in a 3-1 week for the Peahens. Saporito was named Player of the Week after she hit .540 this past week with three homers, two doubles and seven RBI. Against Manhattan, Saporito opened the scoring for Saint Peter’s in game one with an RBI single and then extended the Peahens lead to 5-2 with a solo homer in the fifth. In game two, Saporito hit a two-run homer in the third to extend the Peahens lead to 3-0. LaBovick was named Rookie of the Week as she recorded one win and two saves for the Peahens. She got the start in game on against St. John’s and allowed just one earned run in seven innings pitched and got her second win of the season. Against Manhattan, LaBovick went back to her role as the closer, pitching 1.2 perfect innings and earning the saves in both games. The Peahens are off to their best MAAC start (6-0) since 2003. Saint Peter's will travel to face Monmouth on Wednesday and then head to Buffalo to face Canisius on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday.

NEWARK, NJ (April 7, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (14-10, 6-0 MAAC) continue to be the hottest team in the MAAC after sweeping a doubleheader from the Manhattan College Jaspers (2-24, 1-5 MAAC) 6-5 and 4-3 this afternoon. Julie Saporito continues to be the hottest hitter on the team, going 3-5 in the twinbill with two homers, three runs scored and four RBI. Jessica LaBovick has turned into an effective closer, earning the save in both games today.

The Peahens took the lead in game one, scoring three runs in the third inning. Saporito picked up her first RBI of the day with an RBI single. Michelle Casares continued her great play, smacking a two-run double to give Saint Peter's a 3-0 lead. The Peahens then tacked on a fourth run on an RBI single by Kristen Kinneer in the fourth. The Jaspers then cut into the Saint Peter's lead with two runs of their own in the fourth. Saporito hit her first homer of the day in the fifth to expand the lead back to three runs at 5-2. The Jaspers answered with a solo run in the fifth, but Christie Crowell sent one over the fence to make the score 6-3. The Jaspers made it interesting scoring two in the sixth to cut the Peahen lead to 6-5. LaBovick relieved Tricia Reingle in the seventh and retired Manhattan in order to get the save and the win for Saint Peter's.

Saporito was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Croweel and Kinneer each went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Reingle pitched six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out nine Jaspers.

In game two, Saint Peter's scored first, manufacturing a run in the second as Reingle doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Ariana Payan. The Peahens expanded their advantage in the third on a two-run homer by Saporito. The Jaspers tied the game on one pitch in the fourth when Candice Sheridan hit a three-run homer. Saint Peter's pushed the winning run across in the sixth when Meg Papierniak walked, Jess Gonzales sacrificed her to second, Papierniak advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. Manhattan put two runners on with a one out in the seventh when LaBovick came in to pitch for Amber Phillips and retired both batters she faced to earn her second save of the day and get the doubleheader sweep for the Peahens.

No Peahen had more than one hit in the second game. Saporito was on base three times with the homer and two walks. Phillips pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out six batters.

The Peahens have won 10 of their last 12 games overall. Saint Peter's is 6-0 in the MAAC for the first time since 2003. The Peahens best start in the MAAC was 7-0 back in 2001 when Saint Peter's won their lone MAAC Championship and went to the NCAA Tournament. Saporito is now batting .435 with seven homers, 21 runs scored and 22 RBI.  

The Peahens will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to face Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ.

QUEENS, NY (April 5, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (12-10) split a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon with the St. John's University Red Storm (8-25). The Peahens won game one 5-2 and the Red Storm took game two 4-2. Julie Saporito led Saint Peter's to the game one win with a three-run homer in the sixth.

Game one began as a pitchers duel with neither team being able to get on the scoreboard through the first four innings. St. John's broke through in the fifth with an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead. Saint Peter's responded in the sixth as Kristen Kinneer and Tricia Reingle both reached base. Saporito then hit a towering three-run homer over the left centerfield fence to give the Peahens a 3-1 lead. The Peahens then added two unearned in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead. The Red Storm scored a run in their half of the seventh, but Amber Phillips came in to relieve Jessica LaBovick and preserved the 5-2 win.

LaBovick pitched six innings, allowing two runs, one earned on seven hits. Saporito was 2-3 with the homer.

In game two, St. John's scored single runs in the first, third and fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Michelle Casares put Saint Peter's on the board in the fifth with a solo homer. The Red Storm answered with a run in the sixth to take 4-1 lead. The Peahens tried to claw their back in the seventh, scoring a run on an RBI single by Meg Papierniak, but could not get anymore across and fell 4-2.

Saporito, Casares, Papierniak and Samantha Gable each went 1-3 in the second game.

Saint Peter's will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to face the Manhattan College Jaspers in Newark for a 12pm doubleheader.

EDISON, NJ (April 2, 2007) - Saint Peter's College Peahen pitcher Tricia Reingle earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors after leading the Peahens to a 7-1 week. Reingle was 3-0 this week, pitching three complete games and allowing just four runs, while striking out 17 batters. Her last victory of the week came on Sunday in a 3-1 win over defending MAAC Champion Marist.

Saint Peter's 4-0 in MAAC for First time since 2003

JERSEY CITY, NJ (April 1, 2007) – The Saint Peter’s College Peahens (11-9, 4-0 MAAC) completed a four-game MAAC weekend sweep this afternoon, after taking a doubleheader from the Marist College Red Foxes (8-20, 1-3 MAAC) 3-1 and 8-0. The Peahens took advantage of an error in game one and used a six-run inning to take game two.
 
In game one the two of the best pitchers in the MAAC put on a clinic through the first three innings as the game went scoreless. The Red Foxes finally broke through in the fourth as Annie Castellano belted a solo homer over the leftfield fence. The Peahens responded in their half of the fourth with a two-out rally started by a Chrissy Gannon single. Julie Saporito then walked. Michelle Casares came to plate and it a high deep fly ball to left center that the centerfielder had hit off her glove and carom to the wall. Gannon and Saporito scored giving the Peahens the 2-1 lead. Tricia Reingle then helped herself with an RBI single, scoring Casares and the Peahens led 3-1. Following the Marist homerun, Reingle retired did not allow a runner to get past first and picked up her sixth win of the season.
 
Reingle allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out three. Megan Rios pitched a complete game for Marist, allowing three unearned runs on two hits while striking out three.
 
The Peahens struck first in game two, scoring a run in the first on an RBI double by Saporito. Saint Peter’s then broke the game open, scoring five runs in the fourth. The Peahens had runners on second and third with one out, when Saporito was intentionally walked to load the bases. Casares made the Red Foxes pay by hitting a grand slam over the left field fence, giving the Peahens a 5-0 lead. Reingle then hit a solo shot to make the score 6-0. Reingle ended the game in fifth with a two-run homer giving the Peahens an 8-0 win and the doubleheader sweep.
 
Amber Phillips earned the win, pitching a four-hit shutout. Kristen Kinneer went 2-3 with two runs scored, while Saporito went 2-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Reingle went 2-3 with two homeruns.
 
This is the first time since the 2003 season that the Peahens have started 4-0 in the MAAC. Coincidentally, Saint Peter’s defeated Siena and Marist in 2003 to open MAAC play.
 
The Peahens will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they welcome Lafayette to “The Shack” for a 3pm doubleheader.

JERSEY CITY, NJ (March 31, 2007) – The Saint Peter’s College Peacocks (9-9, 2-0 MAAC) got their MAAC season off on the right foot this afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the Siena College Saints (1-12, 0-2 MAAC) 5-3 and 4-1. A four-run sixth was the difference in the game one, while the long ball was the key to the game two victory.
 
In game one the Peahens fell behind 1-0 when Siena’s Jamie Piela hit the first of her two homers. Saint Peter’s tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Chrissy Gannon. The middle innings went scoreless, but Piela hit her second home run, a two run shot, in the sixth to give the Saints a 3-1 lead. The Peahens then exploded for four runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Tricia Reingle, Meg Papierniak and Christie Crowell and an RBI groundout by Jess Gonzales. Reingle shut the door in the seventh and the Peahens took game one 5-3.
 
Reingle gave up three runs on 10 hits, but struck out seven batters. She also went 1-2 with an RBI at the plate. Julie Saporito went 2-2 with a walk and a run scored, while Papierniak went 2-3 with an RBI. Piela went 2-3 for the Saints with two runs scored and three RBI. Andrea Piela went 3-4.
 
Siena jumped on the board first in game two with a single run in the second. Gonzales tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo homer then Kristen Kinneer put the Peahens ahead with her first collegiate homer, a solo shot in the third. Saint Peter’s then tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Crowell scored an unearned run and Saporito hit an RBI double to make the scored 4-1. Jessica LaBovick earned her first collegiate save, pitching a perfect seventh inning to secure the win.
 
Amber Phillips earned the victory, pitching six innings and allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out four. Kinneer went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Saporito went 2-3 with an RBI.
 
The Peahens will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon as the defending MAAC Champs, Marist come to “The Shack” for a 1pm doubleheader.

EAST NORRITON, PA (March 29, 2007) – The Saint Peter’s College Peahens (7-9) used a seventh inning comeback to split a doubleheader with the Saint Joseph’s University Hawks (4-12) on Thursday. The Peahens lost game one 3-2 in eight innings, but used a five-run seventh in the second game to win 7-5. Sam Tempe recorded her first collegiate win in game two, while Tricia Reingle hit a two run homer to give the Peahens the lead in the seventh.
 
In game one the Peahens got on the board first as Kristen Kinneer knocked in a run in the third inning. The Hawks tied the game in their half of the third, but Meg Papierniak broke the tie in the fourth, giving Saint Peter’s a 2-1 lead. SJU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. The game went to extra innings and the Hawks scored the game-winner in the eighth. Michelle Casares went 3-4, while Reingle went 2-3 in the first game. Jessica LaBovick pitched six strong innings, while Amber Phillips took the loss, pitching the final 1.1 innings.
 
Game two did not start well for Saint Peter’s as Saint Joseph’s jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the fourth inning. The Peahens found the scoreboard in the fifth on a sac fly by Chrissy Gannon and an RBI groundout by Julie Saporito. The game was just about over as there were two outs and no one on in the seventh. The Peahens then came up with five straight hits, including a two-run double by Gannon, an RBI double by Casares and a two-run homer by Reingle to give Saint Peter’s the 7-5 lead. Phillips shutdown the Hawks in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory. Casares went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI in game two, while Gannon went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
The Peahens will play their MAAC opener on Saturday afternoon as the Siena College Saints visit “The Shack”. First-pitch is slated for 1pm.

after doubleheader sweep

JERSEY CITY, NJ (March 27, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (6-8) broke their five-game losing streak this afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from the Army Black Knights (6-19). The Peahens used offense in the first game, winning 11-2 and pitching and defense in game two, winning 2-0. In game two, Tricia Reingle pitched a three-hit shut out, while in game one Michelle Casares went 3-3 with three runs scored and three RBI.

The first game started exactly to plan as Army was shutdown in the first and the Peahens plated four runs. Kristen Kinneer scored the first run on an error and then Casares laced a two-run double to left to give Saint Peter's a 3-0 lead. Saint Peter's tacked on another run when Michelle Casares and Meg Papierniak executed a perfect delayed steal, scoring Casares and making the score 4-0 after one. The Black Knights plated a solo run in the third, but then Saint Peter's exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third. Julie Sapaorito, Casares, Papierniak, Ariana Payan and Christie Crowell all knocked in a run in the third. The Peahens added two more in the fourth on RBI doubles by Reingle and Sam Tempe to put the game away.

Amber Phillips pitched five strong innings, allowing one run and scattering six hits. Saporito went 2-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Reingle went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game two was decided in the bottom of the first, when Saporito hit a two-run homer over the left field fence. That was all Reingle needed as she scattered three hits, struck out seven and retired the final 13 batters that came to the plate. Saporito ended the game 2-3 with the homer.

Saint Peter's will travel to face St. Joseph's on Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia.

peahens drop two at rutgers invitational

PISCATAWAY, NJ (March 25, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (4-8) dropped both of their game at the Rutgers Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Saint Peter's fell to Maine 2-0 in the first game and lost the Rutgers 5-2 in the nightcap. The only offense for Saint Peter's was provided by Julie Saporito and Chrissy Gannon, who each went 2-3, including a solo homer against Rutgers. Maine held the Peahens to just four hits. Jessica LaBovick was handed the loss in game one, while Tricia Reingle took the loss in game two. The Peahens will play their first home game of the season on Tuesday as the Black Knights of Army come to "The Shack" for a 3pm twinbill.

Peahens Head North with 4-6 Record

ORLANDO, FL (March 4-9, 2007) - The Saint Peter's College Peahens (4-6) returned to Jersey City with a 4-6 record after spending a week at the Rebel Games in Orlando, FL. Julie Saporito led the offense in the Sunshine State, batting .379 with six runs scored, two homers and six RBI. Tricia Reingle took care of business at the plate and on the mound, hitting .300 with five RBI and going 3-1 with a 0.54 ERA and 12 strikeouts.

Saint Peter's opened up their trip with a 3-0 win over Penn on March 4th. Reingle pitched a complete game four-hitter, striking out four. Saporito went 3-3 with a run scored and two RBI, while Michelle Casares went 2-3 with a run scored. The Peahens finished their first day of games with a 6-3 loss to IPFW. Saint Peter's fell behind 4-0 and could not recover. Meg Papierniak went 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

On March 5th, the Peahens fell to Sacred Heart 5-3, but beat Valparaiso 3-2 in eight innings. In game one, the Pioneers scored three runs in the third to take the lead and tacked on a fourth run in the fifth. Saint Peter' s scored three in the sixth, but could not muster any more offense. Casares went 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI. In game two, the Peahens scored the tying in the seventh on an RBI single by Papierniak and the scored the winning run in the eighth on an infield hit by Chrissy Gannon. Reingle pitched all eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out three. Gannon went 2-3 with run scored and two RBI.

After a day of rest, Saint Peter's faced Holy Cross and Maine on March 7th. The Peahens jumped all over the Crusaders with 8-2, but lost the Black Bears 6-4. Jessica LaBovick picked up her first collegiate victory, pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs on eight hits. Five Peahens had two-hit game, led by Gannon and Reingle who each went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Maine scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Peahens 6-4. Christie Crowell went 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI. 

On March 8th, Saint Peter's split a pair of games, defeating Tennessee State 1-0 and falling to East Tennessee State 5-2. In game one, Reingle pitched a complete game four hitter and Kristen Kinneer made her first collegiate hit count as it was a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh. Against ETSU Saint Peter's fell behind 4-1 after the first inning and could not recover. Crowell went 2-4 with an RBI in the loss.

On their final day in Orlando, the Peahens dropped two games, falling to South Dakota State 4-2 and Lehigh 5-1. Against SDSU the Peahens scored both of their runs in the fifth on wild pitches.  Against Lehigh, Saint Peter's could only come up with three hits and committed two costly errors.

Saint Peter's will head to Dover, DE this weekend for the Delaware State Tournament. They will face La Salle and Delaware on Friday then take on Lehigh and Delaware State on Saturday.
