Types of Financial Aid
Financial aid comes in a variety of forms including institutional awards, government grants, external scholarships, loans, and work-study.
Institutional Awards– Saint Peter’s College offers generous academic, incentive and need-based grants to incoming freshmen and transfer students based on previous scholastic achievement, potential for success, and demonstrated family need.
Government Grants - are awards that do not need to be repaid. Federal grant programs include PELL and SEOG. A variety of New Jersey State grant programs include the Tuition Aid Grant, Distinguished/Urban Scholar Program and EOF Grants.
External Scholarships– The Financial Aid website provides link to a variety of outside scholarships funded by private foundations and agencies. We encourage students to explore these and other external sources of aid, including funding from organizations in your local community.
Loans – Investing in your college education through educational loans is an excellent way to afford a college education. Students and parents are encouraged to explore the wide variety of federal, state, and private loan programs that can be used to supplement grant programs and make a private education an affordable choice.
Work-study – Part-time campus employment allows students to earn money to help with college expenses. Both institutional and federal work-study are available.
Payment Arrangements – In addition to the variety of financial aid programs, Saint Peter’s College Bursar’s Office provides special Payment Arrangements for families, including installment and credit card plans .
Applying for Financial Aid
There is no separate application for students to be considered for scholarship and grants awarded directly by Saint Peter’s College. These awards are based on the admission application. However, since institutional grants are normally insufficient to cover all costs of attendance, students are urged to file the Federal Application for Student Financial Assistance (FAFSA). This document is necessary for consideration for all government assistance –from grants to loans, and even work-study jobs – as well as Saint Peter’s need-based grants.
In order for Saint Peter’s College to receive a copy of the FAFSA, you must fill-in our institutional code on the electronic or paper FAFSA that you submit. This will ensure timely receipt of the FAFSA in our office. Our code is 002638. Incoming freshmen and transfers are urged to complete it as soon as possible, but no later than March 15th in order to receive a complete financial aid package in early April.
For fastest results, it is best to file the FAFSA electronically (www.fafsa.ed.gov). Our financial aid staff is available to assist you with the application. Call us (201-915-9308), email us (FinancialAid@spc.edu), or come to the office for assistance with filing your FAFSA.
Tuition and Cost of Attendance
College expenses can be categorized into direct costs (charged directly by the institution such as tuition, fees, room and board) and indirect costs (travel, books, personal expenses, etc.). Both types of expenses are taken used to calculate student eligibility for financial aid.
STUDENT FINANCIAL AID SCHOLARSHIP POLICIES
The Student Financial Aid Office at Saint Peter’s College is committed to helping students and their families afford a quality, Jesuit education. We will assist you in obtaining the financial resources for your education, which includes scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs. To receive the fullest consideration for all forms of financial assistance - federal, state, and institutional aid - students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In order to allow time for processing applications and to receive the fullest consideration for all available financial aid, students should submit applications prior to March 15.
ESTIMATED COLLEGE EXPENSES
The amount of money needed to attend college, including tuition, fees, books, transportation, housing, meals, and personal expenses, is the college budget. If the college budget is greater than a student’s family contribution, the difference is that student’s financial need. Current cost of attendance information can be obtained from the Office of Student Financial Aid and the College website.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
To apply for financial aid, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for federal, state and Saint Peter’s financial aid. Students should write in “Title IV Code 002638 Saint Peter’s College, 2641 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ” in the appropriate section of the FAFSA. The FAFSA should be completed on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. For renewal Tuition Aid Grant students, the FAFSA needs to be processed by June 1 prior to the beginning of the Fall term. Application forms are available from the Enrollment Services Center as well as high school guidance counselors’ offices and public libraries. Students are encouraged to apply by March 15th for the fullest consideration of all forms of aid. The application process may change from year to year; therefore, students should contact the Student Financial Aid Office for the most current filing procedures.
CONTINUATION OF COLLEGE-AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS
Students who have been awarded academically based scholarships are expected to maintain superior academic standing. Students who do not achieve scholarship-level performance may forfeit their awards.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
In addition to the information in the college bulletin, several other brochures in the Saint Peter’s College Financial Aid Office contain pertinent financial aid information, including federal, state, and institutional assistance. Students have the right to obtain such information. Students also have the right to appeal financial aid awards by writing to the Scholarship Appeals Committee through the Director of Student Financial Aid. Students receiving financial assistance must be in good standing and must maintain satisfactory progress in their course of study.
Students should contact the Student Financial Aid Office for additional information regarding the College’s refund and repayment policy, award packaging policy, satisfactory academic progress, rights and responsibilities of student aid recipients, or any terms and conditions regarding financial aid awards.
For incoming students at time of enrollment: All award packages must conform to current Saint Peter’s College scholarship and Financial Aid policies. Saint Peter’s College scholarships are awarded in partnership with state, federal and private grant programs, and part of any scholarship offer could be funded through other sources. Although the College’s portion of your award may be adjusted to conform to such policies, the total amount of your grant assistance from all sources will be equal to or greater than the amount listed in your original scholarship letter.
