The student population at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City is a blend of cultures and ethnicities from almost every corner of the globe.

“You will find in our student body an extraordinary mix of ethnic, cultural, and even religious backgrounds,” said late College President James N. Loughran, S.J. “Jesuits have always taken a global viewpoint. That is why newcomers down through the years have felt at ease here and why Saint Peter’s has always felt comfortable welcoming them.”

Overseas students studying at Saint Peter’s today face a different set of challenges than their counterparts from earlier days.

“Young people from Ireland, Italy or other European countries who came here previously were already immersed in the prevailing Western culture,” said Lew Livesay, a Professor of English at Saint Peter’s College and moderator of the Indian Pakistani Culture Club. “A lot of today’s students come from a non-Western tradition and constantly cope with honoring family values, while adapting to America’s frenzied pace,” he added.

SPC Students: Bigyan, Tosin, Niekel and VitusSaint Peter’s College students born and raised here in the United States are following in the footsteps of their classmates — in reverse fashion — by living and learning overseas through the College’s study abroad program.  Since the fall of 1998, more than 70 students studied abroad in more than 20 countries with the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands proving especially popular destinations.

The experience of both sets of students – those from outside the United States who come to Saint Peter’s and Americans who go abroad – has led to the development of a true global village right here at the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Montgomery Street in Jersey City.
