Mission Statement

The Majors and Minors in Sociology and Urban Studies Department, with minors in Anthropology and International/Intercultural Studies, are dedicated to the Jesuit Mission of Saint Peter’s College. We embrace our multicultural, ever evolving, urban, national and global settings as a focal point, inside and outside of the classroom, to develop the whole person in preparation for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service in a diverse and global society. This dedication is reflected in our curriculum, our research, our graduates, our scholarship and our grants. We hope to provide our students with an awareness of, and a sense of obligation to, their fellow citizens.

Sociology and Urban Studies are four-year courses of study leading to Bachelor’s degrees. Both degrees prepare students for graduate work and employment. Sociology can lead to careers in social work, advertising, marketing, museums, human services, census bureau and other forms of government, as well as teaching. Urban Studies graduates also often work in social work, for government agencies including housing and youth services, planning firms, private non-profits, community organizations and private industry.  Our graduates also enter the Peace Corps and the Jesuit Volunteers.

Currently we have students in a number of graduate programs including Sociology, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Social Work, Urban Planning, Urban Policy, Public Administration, Law School and Education.

Many graduates from both Sociology and Urban Studies double major in Education and become school teachers or administrators. Others double major in Psychology, Political Science, Communication and Criminal Justice among others. Still more take at least one minor. We encourage these types of interdisciplinary work.

Close to  half of our classes have moved beyond the gates of the college to include community learning components. To improve the educational experiences of SPC students we introduce them to community based research and the work that local organizations do.  We have teamed up with local governmental and community based organizations to do evaluations, plan programs and allow students to explore career possibilities. Our students conduct research projects, hold conferences, attend conferences and continue to work with community groups and faculty to learn new research skills.

Sociology majors acquire a greater understanding and appreciation of life in a diverse world. They become aware of how society influences lives. They learn to value the power of individuals and groups in changing society. Majors develop skills in gathering and analyzing data on social issues and putting this information into a sociological context. Sociology also has a six year articulation agreement in Occupational Therapy with Seton Hall University where students will receive a BA in three years from Saint Peter's and an MS in Occupational Therapy from Seton Hall in another three years.

Sociology and Economics Major Suegatha Kai, a native of Liberia, spent a study abroad semester in Costa Rica in Fall 2011. She is pictured here at the volcano Arenal. It is a large volcano but she really is that short.

Many of our majors spend a semester abroad and more take advantage of short-term travel trips to many places including Mexico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Puerto Rico and Spain.

Urban Studies majors learn about the development of metropolitan areas and the challenges facing these areas today. The city is utilized as a living laboratory to explore the lives and issues of its residents. Interdisciplinary in nature, the major draws on courses from several departments and programs. Students learn to work with government and community organizations to improve the quality of life in urban areas.

In addition to minors in Sociology or Urban Studies, the Department offers minors in Africana Studies, Anthropology and International/Intercultural Studies.

A program in Public Policy is available in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies for both an Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree.
