Mathematics is important because its concepts and techniques are essential in a wide variety of theoretical and practical disciplines. It is not merely the computational solution of problems, but the thought processes which are developed during the analysis of problems, that carry over into countless other fields of human endeavor. So, while the mathematics programs at Saint Peter's College provide a foundation for work in mathematics, they also provide valuable career preparation even for careers that make little or no explicit use of the specific techniques they cover.

The mathematics program seeks to give its majors an advanced level of mathematical maturity, as well as enhanced logical thinking and problem solving skills, all of which are useful in any profession. In particular, this program empowers its majors to study at the graduate level, work in industry, or teach at the secondary school level.

The Mathematical Association of America gives three reasons why employers seek out mathematics majors:

  • By majoring in mathematics you demonstrate to employers that you are not afraid of intellectual challenges.
  • By majoring in mathematics you earn the respect of employers who will appreciate your thinking skills
  • By majoring in mathematics you develop solid analytical skills that empower you to learn what you need on the job.

In a recent survey, employers identified four reasons why they hire mathematics majors rather than majors in other fields. They said that mathematics majors:

  • reason quantitatively
  • draw accurate conclusions from data
  • apply problem-solving strategies
  • think analytically and logically
