Third Research Camp

The Third research camp focused on data analysis and creating initial products. On the first day of the camp, results from the quantitative portion of the survey were presented to the youth along with a facilitated discussion of how the means and percentages could be interpreted. While the morning computer lab setting focused on the quantitative measure, the afternoon group work consisted of coding the open-ended responses to the surveys, documenting outstanding quotes, and matching up these open-ended responses with other data collected thus far. After discussing themes across the groups, the youth moved to creating products, finishing up and presenting their first drafts the second day. Using the data as a reference point, one group worked on spoken word/ poetry, another group wrote and video taped a skit, a third created post cards and graphics as part of an awareness campaign. At the end of the day, the youth researchers had a Salsa Lesson followed by a barbecue at the King-Kairos Social Justice House. At the barbecue we were joined by college student mentors, who hosted the researchers for a pool party and an overnight in the dorms. On Sunday, the youth researchers continued working on their collective projects. They also devised slogans or “bumper stickers” summarizing their thoughts. Finally the projects were presented/performed to the whole group.
