Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society

Donal Malone, Ph.D.
Faculty Advisor

2009 Alpha Kappa Delta Inductees with Moderator Donal Malone and Vice President Marylou Yam

Alpha Kappa Delta is the International Sociology Honor Society. It has two main goals: to recognize and promote excellence in

scholarship in the field of sociology and to use sociological knowledge and research to serve others. The name Alpha Kappa Delta comes from the first letters of the three classical Greek words that represent its ideals: anthropos, meaning mankind (humankind); katamanthano, meaning to examine closely or acquire knowledge, and diakoneo, meaning to do service.

Alpha Kappa Delta was founded in 1920 at the University of California by Dr. Emory Bogardus, other sociology faculty, and fourteen graduate students. In the following year, Dr. Bogardus invited other sociology departments to establish chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta. Today, Alpha Kappa Delta has 80,000 members worldwide.

With your induction into Alpha Kappa Delta, you are being recognized for your academic achievement in the field of Sociology and Urban Studies. However, your membership in this elite organization also gives you a special responsibility. It requires you to use the knowledge and skills you have acquired to improve society. Through your education at Saint Peter’s college you have learned to become “men and women for others.” As members of Alpha Kappa Delta we hope you will continue in this path.
