ITS System Service Advisory
March 15, 2010
Please be advised that MSN/Hotmail has blocked incoming mail from our campus. Hotmail will block mail when they receive something that appears to be coming from a compromised computer. In this case, a computer on our campus was compromised and thus began sending bogus emails.
This problem has been diagnosed and email service to Hotmail should resume in 24 – 48 hours.
We would like to remind everyone to be careful before opening any attachment from an untrustworthy source. Even if you recognize the sender’s name, it does not necessarily mean the email is valid. If you have a question about the validity of the sender, please contact the Helpdesk. Also, please do not send any personal information through the mail.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Modification to Computer Login Procedures
Saint Peter’s College’s ITS Department has recently undergone an audit by Grant Thornton LLP. The audit reviewed current ITS procedures as they relate to safe computing and implementation of “best practices”.
The findings suggested that Information Technology Services tighten its procedures as follow:
1. Require users to re-log in if the computer is inactive for a period of time.
2. Enforce compliance with College Computer Policies and Procedures by requiring users to confirm that they have read such polices.
As such, the College has agreed to implement the following changes as of February 16, 2010.
1. If a computer is inactive for ½ hour, user will be required to login again.
2. After logging into the computer, the user will be required to confirm that they have read and will comply with the College’s computer policies.
We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure computing environment that will protect College data. Let us know if you have questions or concerns and we thank you in advance for your support of this initiative.
