SPC/NJIT Dual Degree
Five Year Dual Degree Program
Saint Peter’s College (Physics) and
New Jersey Institute of Technology (Electrical Engineering)
General Description
Saint Peter’s college (SPC) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) jointly offer a five-year program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from SPC and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
The student enters as a fully matriculated freshman at SPC and continues his or her studies for three years at SPC to satisfy the majority of the requirements for an SPC BS in physics degree. Included are studies in the liberal arts and social sciences as well as departmental requirements. A student may take courses at both institutions during the 2nd and 3rd year. A student is fully matriculated at NJIT during the 4th and 5th years of the program.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Physics is awarded by SPC after the fourth year of the study in the program, assuming that all degree requirements have been satisfactorily met. It is expected that the student will make a written decision to apply for automatic entry to NJIT during the spring of their freshman year or during the fall of their sophomore year, at the latest.
Admission
In general, a freshman entering SPC with four years of mathematics and three years of science, and SAT mathematics score at or above 600, and high school rank in the top 25% of their class will be encouraged to enroll in the program. However,
A student may declare his/her intentions to pursue the Dual Degree Program as early as the freshman year but no later than the fall semester of the sophomore year. A later declaration may make it impossible to satisfy the degree requirements within the five year time frame.
The Academic Dean of SPC will consult with the chairperson of the Department of Applied Science and Technology and faculty of the Physics Program before recommending admission for any student. In general, satisfactory performance during the first three semesters of study at SPC is deemed to be at least a B average in mathematics and science courses and a C+ cumulative grade point average.
In the case of the students who do not receive the Dean’s recommendation, automatic acceptance to the program at NJIT will not be granted. However, NJIT may accept these students if its Office of Admissions determines that there is a reasonable chance for the student to be successful in the course of study. Such determination will coincide with standard transfer admission procedures at NJIT.
Students who wishes to change programs may apply for admission to NJIT at any time during their tenure at SPC and will be subject to standard transfer admissions procedures at NJIT.
Acceptable Grades
Courses in which a grade of “C” or better has been earned and which are contained in the program will be accepted by both institutions for their respective degrees. Any other courses with lower grades that are required for the SPC degree must be repeated. Any other courses with lower grades that are required for the NJIT degree must also be repeated if so required by NJIT’s current policy on course prerequisites.
Registration and Fees
SPC and NJIT will bill the students for tuition and fees appropriate for his/her course enrollment at each institution. During year 1 through 3 of the program, students will be considered to be fully matriculated at SPC. The grade point average and enrollment status at SPC will take into account the credits and grades received at NJIT. It will be the joint responsibility of the student and his/her advisor at SPC to ensure that the Registrar is apprised of the courses taken at NJIT.
During year 4 and 5, students will be considered to be fully matriculated at NJIT. Any courses taken at SPC during this period will be reported directly to the Registrar of NJIT to ensure that student’s continuing full-time status.
Any scholarships and/or grants awarded by either institution will apply only to the courses offered by that institution.
