Common Reading Program

The Freshman Common Reading Program at Saint Peter's College has been designed to help foster community among our first year students, promote shared values, and a create a sense of academic rigor. It also serves to connect faculty and student affairs personnel by enhancing the classroom experience with co-curricular activities. The Saint Peter’s College Freshman Common Reading Program learning goals and objectives are listed below:

                                                                                                                

Freshman Common Reading Program Goals:

  • Strengthen written and oral communication skills
  • Enhance critical thinking, creativity and analytical reasoning
  • Foster a spirit of academic community
  • Promote reflection and dialogue among students and faculty around a common academic activity
 

Freshman Common Reading Program Objectives:

  • Engage in reflection and dialogue
  • Utilize critical thinking, creativity and analytical reasoning to improve reading, written and oral communication skills
  • Acquire a sense of shared academic goals
  • Develop written and oral communication skills
  • Appreciate and discuss the values embodied in the text

All freshman students are required to read the common reading text as a part of their English composition course. This year’s book selection is Crossing into America:  the New Literature of Immigration, a collection of works edited by Louis Mendoza and Subramanian Shankar.  The text will be an integral part of the First Year Experience.  As part of the program, a series of seminars and trips will be offered.  Students will be required to attend at least two of these activities, and the text will be utilized for assignments as part of their English composition courses.

Keynote Lecture: Modern Immigration

Wednesday, October 5, 12:00 to 1:00 pm, RLC
Flor Bermudez, attorney for Lambda Legal, will discuss modern immigration. This event is mandatory for all freshmen.

Field Trip to Ellis Island

Sunday, October 16, 10:00 am to 3:30 pm
Visit The Ellis Island Immigration Museum, an important and iconic part of America’s history. Over 12 million passed through the island while it was in operation. Today, more than 40% of Americans have an ancestor who entered the country through Ellis Island. Space is limited. Please arrive 15 minutes early, as bus will leave promptly at 10 am. Sign up by Monday, October 3, in the Dean’s Office on the First Floor of McDermott. 

Film Series Week

Tuesday, October 18, and Wednesday, October 19, Pope Lecture Hall
Each day a film will be shown highlighting different perspectives on immigration. Discussion will follow each presentation.

International Food and Culture Fair

Wednesday, October 12, 4:00 pm, Roy Irving Theatre
Join the various cultural clubs and organizations on campus for an afternoon of delicious ethnic cuisine and a celebration of culture. 

Yo Soy Latina

Wednesday, November 2, Optional dinner served at 6:00 pm. Space is limited. RSVP required. Details to follow. Show starts at 7:00 pm. 

Come and enjoy a fun and inspiring play about a group of diverse Latina women who encounter a variety of different prejudice experiences in contemporary America and are forced to examine their true identity.

Journeys of Faith, Journeys of Culture

Tuesday, November 8, 4:00 to 8:00 pm, McIntyre Lounge
Join us for an evening of reflection and workshop dedicated to learning more about yourself and your place in the larger interfaith community. Space is limited. Please sign up for this event at Campus Ministry. 

Crossing Into America Essay Contest and Symposium

Wednesday, November 16, 4 pm, Library Main Floor Student work will be featured, and essay contest winners will be honored at this afternoon reception.
