SPC Goes Green

leafThe College's Commitment

President Cornacchia has signed the College Presidents Climate Commitment to acknowledge that Saint Peter's College will continue to be an early adopter of environmentally friendly solutions.  The pledge calls for an action plan, inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and periodic progress reports.  While this promise requires ongoing efforts this section of our website serves to keep the Community apprised of progress to date.

Campus Initiatives

  • The laundry rooms in the Residence Halls were equipped with new Maytag Neptune front load high-efficiency, Energy Star washers and dryers.  Each of these washers will save approximately 15,000 gallons of water a year.
  • Come Together:  Many Campus Events have an environmental focus
  • Cleaning with Non-Toxic Formulas:  Collins Building Services has switched its cleaning products to green seal formulas.
  • No More Styrofoam:  Sodexho, our campus food service, has banned Styrofoam cups and plates.
  • Making the Most of the Web:  Enrollment Services will eliminate the consumption of tens of thousands of sheets of paper which was used to print course schedules each semester.  Course Schedule information is available through SPIRIT Online.
  • Survey Says:  Dr. Joyce Henson's spring semester class, Senior Marketing Seminar, has been working towards improving the College's recycling practices.  The class is conducting student surveys and staff interviews to research current practices.  Following an analysis of the results the class will present its findings and recommendations to the College Community.
  • Green Faith:  SPC joined the New Jersey based organization Green Faith
  • Energy Solutions:  R3 Energy Consultants have helped the College to reduce its carbon footprint on the environment:
    • The old absorption chillers at the Recreational Center and McDermott Hall were replaced with state-of-the-art premium efficiency electric chillers with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). These were the first chillers of its kind to be installed within an educational facility in the state of New Jersey.
    • From 2004 - 2007 the College has reduced the total energy consumption for the main campus (i.e., #2 fuel oil, natural gas and electricity) by 29%.  This measure avoided expulsion of 1,450 tons of harmful CO2 emissions into our atmosphere. That’s the equivalent of 225,000 trees grown or the displacement of 350 cars from the road.
    • Green building policies will be implemented across campus, and competitions between residence halls and neighboring campuses will further encourage students to promote and exercise conservation measures.
    • In the near future, 50% of the College’s total electricity supply is expected to be purchased from green sources. Wind and small hydro and solar powered projects are further down the horizon.
  • Eco-friendly Publications:
    • The  Office of Admission is committed to  the use of recycled products for publications, as well as working with vendors respectful of the environment. Whenever possible pieces are printed on Chorus Art which is an elemental chlorine-free paper containing 50% recycled content  with 25% post consumer waste. This is a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper.
    • The Office of Enrollment Services will prevent the consumption of tens of thousands of sheets of paper by offering course schedules exclusively online.
