Mexico: The Politics of the Past and Present, Fall Semester, 2008. Through a combination of readings, lectures, video presentations, and class discussions, this course will introduce students to Mexico and its politics. We will explore the common themes which have and/or continue to affect the politics of the country: its geography, its patterns of historical development ,the political culture of Mexico and how it is changing; social conditions within the region, vehicles through which citizens participate in political action, such as interest groups and political parties, the organization and powers of the state and its officials, and Mexico’s prospects for establishing/maintaining a long term stable democratic tradition.

Globalization, Tourism & Baseball in the Dominican Republic, Winter Trimester, 2008. This short-term, study abroad course examines globalization and its impact on the Dominican Republic by focusing on the tourism and baseball industries. Prior to departure, students will learn about globalization, sociological fieldwork techniques and Dominican society. In the DR, students will spend 9 days collecting data from a variety of settings ranging from baseball games to tourism zones. Students will take photos, collect video footage and conduct some interviews. At the end of the course, students will write critical essays documenting their experiences and findings as they relate to globalization.
Travel dates are tentatively set for January 7 through January 16. Additional cost for travel and activities is approximately $1700. The course meets three times before travel and three times after.
