What are SPC Security Alerts?

SPC Security Alerts are text messages sent to the cell phones of students, faculty and staff who have elected to receive notices of imminent threats to public safety on or near campus.

Why text messages?

Providing a secure learning, living and working environment for students and employees often requires sharing information quickly and broadly. Given the prevalence of cell phones on campus text messaging is a valuable tool in this effort. Participating users will receive messages within seconds of their transmission.

What will the SPC Security Alerts tell me?

An SPC Security Alert will state the type of threat and indicate suggested action. Because the messages must be brief you may be directed to call a dedicated security telephone number for detailed instructions where appropriate. Messages will be sent to all participating users regardless of affiliation to specific campuses/sites or day/evening sessions. For example, in the event of a threat to the Jersey City Campus all participating users will receive the same message even if their primary campus is our Englewood Cliffs campus.

Who can sign up for SPC Security Alerts?

All students, faculty and staff of Saint Peter's College may sign up for this service.

What do I need to get SPC Security Alerts
  • A valid SPIRIT ID number (located on the back of your OneCardID); and
  • A cell phone capable of receiving text messages. If you are unsure if your phone can receive text messages please call your service provider.
Will my cell phone number be kept confidential?

Yes. Cell phone numbers obtained by SPC Security Alerts are not shared or sold to any other systems or services.

How Much Does It Cost?

There is no charge to users for signing up. Individual cell phone plans will apply normal charges for the text message.

How many cell phone numbers may I register?

One number per SPIRIT ID.

How do I sign up for SPC Security Alerts?

Register your cell phone number online at www.spc.edu/Alerts. You will need to know your SPIRIT ID number.

What if I change my cell phone service provider or phone number?

If you change your phone number you need to re-submit the participation form at www.spc.edu/Alerts and indicate “Update Existing Registration” under Action to avoid an interruption in service.

How can I opt-out of SPC Security Alerts?

The system is completely optional. You may opt-out (discontinue) at any time by re-submitting the participation form at www.spc.edu/Alerts and indicating “Opt out” under Action.

What is Privatel?

Privatel is the vendor with whom Saint Peter’s College has contracted to provide the SPC Security Alerts service. There are advantages to having an off-site vendor host the service. For example, if a widespread power outage affected SPC’s campuses, we could still use Privatel’s service to communicate with SPC Security Alerts users.

I don't have text messaging on my cell phone. How will I be notified in the event of an emergency?

SPC Security Alerts is just one of the methods the College will use to communicate emergency information. If appropriate, global e-mails to SPC email addresses, the telephone switchboard, flyers, local media and other communication tools will also be used.
