Giordano Scholarship

 

Through the generosity of James J. Giordano, Ph.D. ’81 a named annual scholarship has been established to support a Saint Peter's College “Student Scholar" for a 4-8 week period of study at the Center for Clinical Bioethics of Georgetown University Medical Center, in Washington, D.C. starting in the Summer of 2007. 
 
This scholarship is intended to support an upper-level undergraduate student interested in pursuing mentored independent study on a topic that in some way lies at the intersection of brain-mind-self-biomedical science, and society.
 
Selection is competitive and based on:

-Expressed intention to pursue further studies in one of those areas germane to the fields of psychology, science, medicine, nursing, ethics or health policy.
-Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
-Application essay of 1500-1800 words on “My Goals as a Summer Scholar.”
-Currently pursuing a major in psychology, pre-med, or nursing. 
-Completion of Junior year.
-Three recommendations as follows: Chair of the Psychology Department, Chair of the department from the applicant’s declared major, faculty member of applicant’s choice.  
 
The selection process is administered by the Chair of the Psychology Department in consultation with the Academic Dean and with the approval of the sponsor. The successful applicant will receive financial support to cover administrative fees for the program and a housing stipend. Saint Peter's College agrees to manage the selection process in accordance with the financial policies established by Board of Trustees. 
 
The James J. Giordano, Ph.D. ’81 scholar would be required to work on a project that involves a collaborative effort with a faculty mentor at Saint Peter's College and Georgetown University Medical Center. At the conclusion of the project a paper submitted to a peer-reviewed journal and oral presentation would be expected.
