Recap:
JERSEY CITY, NJ- The Saint Peter's College Peahens' soccer team (0-2) fell to the NJIT Highlanders this afternoon, 2-1. Junior Samantha Lockhart scored the lone goal for the Peahens.
The first half saw both teams play to a scoreless tie despite each teams having a few chances to get on the board. The Peahens outshot the Highlanders by a 4-3 margin in the half while NJIT goalie Sadie Mele made three key saves to keep her team in the game.
In the second half, both teams came out strong. NJIT forward Camille Billing broke the scoreless tie at the 50:00 minute mark. Almost twenty-two minutes later, Lockhart tied the game at one. Midfielder Chloe Zmolek assisted on the play. At the 82:29 mark of the game, NJIT regained the lead. Rebecca Tustin's shot was saved by Caitlin Hoffer but the rebound came right to opportunistic midfielder Amanda Redden who burried it home. Saint Peter's tried to tie up the game in the final seven and half minutes but were unsuccessful.
For the game, Saint Peter's was awarded four corner kicks compared to three for NJIT. Hoffer made three saves and Mele stopped five for NJIT. Freshman Emily Fenice continued her strong play as she totaled three shots. Lockhart also had three shots as well. Junior Dana Grimes played well defensively, shutting down the Highlanders' attack.
The Peahens will return to action on Friday, September 3rd when they travel to West Long Branch, NJ to take on the Monmouth University Hawks. The game is scheduled to start at approximately 4pm.
