JERSEY CITY, NJ - (November 21, 2009) – The Saint Peter’s College Peacocks (1-2) dropped a 68-56 decision to the Youngstown State University Penguins (2-2) this afternoon at the Yanitelli Center. The Peacocks trailed by just three at the break and then by just one early in the second half, but the Penguins went on an 11-2 run to take a nine point lead and never looked back leading by as many as 17 in the second half. Wesley Jenkins was the Peacocks leading scorer with 19 points.
 
Saint Peter’s quickly fell behind 5-0, but then scored nine unanswered points to take a 9-5 lead at the 14:58 mark. The lead then changed hands several times and the score was tied at 20 with 4:37 to play. The Penguins then scored six straight points to take a 26-20 lead with 44 seconds on the clock. Jenkins ended the half with a long three pointer at the buzzer to make the halftime score 26-23 Youngstown State.
 
Jenkins had eight points and four rebounds in the first half, while Nick Leon had seven points. Kelvin Bright had six points in the opening frame to lead Youngstown State. The Peacocks shot just 33.3% from the field, while allowing the Penguins to shot nearly 40%. Youngstown had a slight rebounding advantage in the first half.
 
Saint Peter’s cut the lead down to one point three times in the first four minutes of the second half, but with the score 30-29 YSU, the Penguins went on a 11-2 run to take a 41-32 lead with 10:16 to play. The Peacocks then cut the deficit to five points at 41-36, but Youngstown then went on a 14-2 run to take their largest lead at 55-38 with 4:48 to play. Saint Peter’s could only get to within 10 points before falling by the 12 point margin.
 
Jenkins was 7-21 from the field, had seven rebounds and two steals. Ryan Bacon added 17 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Leon scored 13 points and had four assists. Bright finished with 20 points for the Penguins, while Sirlester Martin added 11 points. Saint Peter’s shot 39.6% to Youngstown 33.9%. The Peacocks were just 2-17 from beyond the arc and made 16 turnovers. The Penguins were 19-31 from the line and won the rebounding battle 38-34.
 
Saint Peter’s will hit the road for the first game of a three game road trip on Tuesday night as they travel to face Long Island University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm and can be heard live on www.redzonemedia.com.
