Jersey City, NJ (May 14, 2008) – The Saint Peter’s College Peacocks (19-29) defeated the Monmouth University Hawks (34-14) 3-2 off the bat of Conor Mullee who drove in the winning run on a single through the right side in the bottom of the ninth. Jeff Bayse (2-2) was awarded the victory despite giving up the tying run in the top of the ninth. Justin Esposito (2-1) was handed the loss serving the game winner to Mullee.
Saint Peter’s got on the board first in the third on an error by the second baseman on a ball that hit off his foot allowing Andrew Martirano to score from second to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead. Dennis Alexander crossed the plate on a wild pitch that got behind the catcher to make it 2-0 after three. Monmouth scored a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1 on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. The Hawks gave Bayse the blown save scoring tying run on a sac bunt in the ninth. Alexander started the ninth inning rally with a base on balls. Brandon Edwards got a base knock on a bloop single to left that moved Alexander to third. Mullee picked him up with an RBI single just out of the first baseman’s reach knocking in Alexander to give Saint Peter’s the 3-2 walk-off victory.
Mulle finished the day hitting 2-5. John Lynch and Edwards had the other two hits for the Peacocks.
Saint Peter’s will cap off their 2008 campaign with a three game series with the Rider University Broncs beginning this Friday at 3:30pm at Jaroschak Field. The doubleheader will be played on Saturday at 12pm. The Senior Day festivities will begin at approximately 11:45am as the Peacocks will honor seniors Dennis Alexander, Chris Innis, Claude Jones, Kevin Kallert, Dave Lewandoski, Santo Maertz, Eric Miksitz and Joe Romano.
