DEFINITIONS and Purpose of assessment at saint peter's college

Assessment

  • Engages all college personnel who are in a position to assist in the attainment of student outcomes.
  • Utilizes the expertise and uniquesness of each unit of the college in order to determine what to assess, how to assess it, and how to best use the results.
  • Is a dialogue among students, faculty and administrators to determine how well students are learning.
  • Employs quantitative and qualitative measures of students' progress.
  • Involves the student in the process of assessing her/his learning.
  • The purpose of assessment planning is to assure seamless coordination between the institution's mission, goals, and objectives and the resulting student learning gained through the educational programs and activities at the college. The on-going dialogue provides opportunities at every level of the college to:

    • Improve student learning and teaching
    • Design and deliver coherent curricula
    • Generate data for national benchmarking

In the classroom, the results of assessment are visible in course syllabi that delineate student-centered measurable learning outcomes, in multiple evaluation methods and in feedback on a student's progress. http://www.spc.edu/pages/2293.asp
