common off-campus access problems and faq

Expand all | Collapse all

Can I connect to the library's databases from off-campus?
Yes, the library uses Ezproxy to deliver off-campus access to licensed databases.
What is Ezproxy?
EzProxy is a program for authenticating remote users.
Do I need to configure EzProxy on my computer?
No, EzProxy does not require any setup on the part of the user.  Just click the database link and enter your barcode with no spaces.
Do certain Internet Service Providers conflict with EzProxy?
In some cases your Internet Service Provider may block you from viewing websites over the ports that EzProxy utilizes. Click on TEST 1 and TEST 2 to verify that the necessary ports are not blocked by your ISP. If you get an identical message from both tests stating that You Are Connecting From IP Address than you should be able to connect remotely
Does it matter which browser I use?
Ezproxy is compatible with most major browsers except AOL's built-in browser.
I am an AOL user, what should I do?
Off-campus access may not work correctly if you use AOL's built-in browser. Please download Firefox or another free browser. When you are online minimize AOL and open the new browser to access library databases.
Where do I find my barcode number?
Your barcode is the 14 digit number on the back of your OneCard starting with 2698000
I don't have a OneCard?
You must be a current student and have a valid OneCard in order to use the library databases.
I entered my barcode at the login prompt but received an error that my Username or Password is Incorrect?
Verify that you have entered the 14 digit barcode number beginning with 2698000 and not your 5 digit Spirit ID.  If you have entered it correctly and are still having a problem contact the library.
I am prompted to login but afterwards I get a message to Contact The EzProxy Administrator?
This message indicates a temporary off-campus access problem with the database you're trying to use. Please write to jbongiovanni@spc.edu  and include the database you were trying to access.
I cannot connect to the database I want?
Try connecting to another database. If you are able to connect than this may indicate that the first database vendor is experiencing technical difficulties. In this event please write to jbongiovanni@spc.edu and include your name, barcode number, the database you were trying to access, any error messages you received and the time of day.
Faculty/Admin: I use VPN to access campus resources from home but cannot access library databases?
You must turn off VPN in order to use the library proxy server
I am at work and cannot access the databases, why not?
Your company or organization likely has its own Firewall and/or proxy in place. Speak with the systems administrator at your place of business to see if they have security settings in place that interfere with Ezproxy.
I am prompted to login but afterwards I get an error saying Page Cannot be Displayed?
The above messages normally indicate an issue with your browser's Cookie Settings, Pop-Up Blocking, or your computer's Firewall is blocking the database site.
