Applying to Graduate School

Are you thinking of applying to graduate school?

Here are some suggestions to help you start the process (and remember, it is a process, with many steps).

  1. Talk to your professors, especially your advisor and/or any professors that you have worked closely with on research.
  2. Make an appointment to see Dr. Chew, SPC's advisor for students interested in applying to graduate school.
  3. Make a list of about five schools that you think are the best places for you to continue your studies. This list can include schools that you consider  your "dream school," and also schools that you think you have a realistic chance of getting into.
  4. Get on the Internet and find the websites for each school and for the program that you wish to apply for.
  • What are the admission requirements?
  • What kinds of courses are offered?
  • Who are the faculty----does anyone of them do research and teach in a subject that you are interested in?
  • Do you want to get a Master's? A Doctorate?
  • What kinds of fellowship opportunities or financial aid are offered?

How do I go about applying?

Almost every graduate school application contains these components:

  • Transcript
  • GRE, GMAT, or other standardized test scores (some schools also require that you take the GRE in your subject field)
  • Letters of recommendation (usually 2 or 3)
  • Personal statement and/or admissions essay(s)
  • Application form
