Intramural Softball Rules and Regulations

The ASA Rules of Softball will govern play with the following exceptions:

1.  Games will be 7 innings each with a 60 minute time limit.  A new inning will not begin after the time limit.  The home team will always receive their "last licks" even if the time limit is reached.  In the event of a tie game, the "international tie breaker" will be used.  The "international tie breaker" consistsof each team getting 3 outs, but a runner starting the inning on second base.  A 10-run mercy rule will be in effect in the fifth inning.

2.  The umpire will call strikes.  There are no walks.  All pitching must be slow pitch.  Modified, slingshot, windmill, and high arc are prohibited.

3.  No stealing, leading, or bunting.  There is no sliding allowed.  Anyone who slides into a base will be automatically called out.  A player is not allowed to dive into a base to avoid a tag.

4.  Teams will play with eight men in the field.  A team may bat as many different batters as they like.  Free substitutions are allowed throughout the game.  The batting order may not change with the substitutions.  For example, if a player comes late, he must be placed at the end of the batting order, not interrucpting the already established lineup.  No pinch runners are allowed.

Ground Rules

a)  Any ball hit over the barrier on Court 5 is a home run.  Any ball that rolls beyond or skips over/by barrier is a ground rule double.  If a ball is misplayed causing it to go beyond the barrier, the ball is still live.  The ball becomes dead if it rolls into an unplayable situation at the judgement of the umpire.

b)  Any ball that hits the blue of the Bubble or anywhere off the light poles/fixtures in fair territory must be played as a live ball situation.  Any ball that hits in the white of the Bubble (including foul territory) will be playable as a fly ball that can be caught for an out (runners advance at their own risk).
