  • Advertising Age - Ad Age Dataplace
  • American Export Register from Thomas Publishing provides 5,500 product and service categories from over 44,000 U.S. Companies. The site is available in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian, with Chinese Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic and Russian forthcoming. Registration is free but you have to agree to accept e-mail ads in return.
  • American Stock Exchange The other exchange
  • Annual Report Gallery Over 2,200 corporate annual reports are available from this site.
  • AskAlex A directory of 1.8 million UK companies, searchable by name, product, or location.
  • Assignment Calculator This very helpful site from the University of Minnesota lets you create a timeline of activities that are necessary to write a research paper and provides definitions, tutorials, research guides, and other helpful aides.
  • AT&T 800 Numbers
  • Big Yellow Bell Atlantic white and yellow pages.
  • BigCharts powerful charting tools that let you prepare custom charts for timeframes, compare one company to its industry or other companies, chart selected indicators, or select from a variety of chart types
  • Bizjournals.com Searchable business news from American Business Journals, publishers of weekly papers in over 40 US regions. Their journals are not included in LexisNexis or Factiva and can be a good source of local company news
  • BizWeb Business Guide to the Web links to over 43,000 company Web sites, with an index by industry.

  • Companies House the UK registry for corporations. Free information is limted to company address, previous names, name changes and dates. It does provide a series of FAQs and notes on the requirements for registering a company as a limited or PLC corporation.
  • CompanyLink Links to information on 65,000 companies. There is a charge for some information but current press releases from PR Newswire, stock price, SEC Filings, contact information and CorpTech Rankings are free.
  • CompanySleuth information on publicly traded companies, e-mail alerts on SEC filings and news.
  • Core Business Journals A subject list of major business journals, linked to the databases in which they are carried.
  • Core Competencies for Business Reference: Company and Industry Research Excellent site from the Business Reference and Services Section of the American Library Association. Question and answer format introduces key terms and key sources for locating information.

  • CorporateInformation This is a metasite that provides annotated links to other sites that have data on public and private companies. You can select links to sites in the US, Europe, Asia, or Latin America. It also provides explanations of foreign corporate terms and abbreviations.
  • D&B Small Business Solutions Look up company names in the US or worldwide. Credit reports can be purchased on this site from Dun & Bradstreet but there is free access to searching and you can use the site to see how many companies there in are a particular industry, broken out into region, number of employees, or other variables.
  • Developing a Business Plan a guide from the Small Business Administration.
  • E.H. Net encyclopedia An encyclopedia of economic and business history
  • EDGAR Database EDGAR is the Security and Exchange Commission's database of company filings. All publicly traded companies have to file quarterly (10Q), annual (10K) and other reports with the SEC. Use EDGAR for detailed financial reports on companies.
  • EDGAR ONLINE Search for individuals named in SEC filings or search for compensation paid to executives. Searching can be by company, individual, or industry.
  • Esp@cenet Free patent iformation from the European Patent Office. This database lets you search patent applications in their original language. You will also be able to locate US patents at this site. Images are included.
  • EURIDILE - Le Registre National du Commerce et des Sociétés - RNCS Official directory of over 3.2 million French companies. Provides basic information for free and financial data for a fee.
  • Europages Europages lets you search by company name, product, or industry group and returns matching lists of companies with addresses and, in some cases, gross sales or workforce size. It provides links to company web pages and catalogs if the company has signed on to be listed in Europages.
  • Forbes 400 and other Forbes People lists From Forbes Magazine
  • Forbes 500 and other Forbes Company lists From Forbes Magazine
  • Forbes.com Companies
  • Fortune Global 500 The world's largest corporations, by revenue.
  • FreeEDGAR EDGAR with real-time access and downloadable data
  • Gateway to Associations A database of almost 7,000 US associations, produced by the American Society of Association Executives
  • GuideStar search for financial reports on over 600,000 501(c)(3) not-for-profit (or non-profit) organizations.
  • Historical Prices Historical stock prices from Yahoo. Enter a range of dates for daily, weekly, or monthly prices. Data goes back to 1970.
  • Hoover's IPO Central Information on recent filings for Initial Public Offerings of stock. Search by name, industry, or location.
  • Hoover's Online - The Business Network Hoover's provides business news and corporate profiles. Print editions of Hoover's profiles for major companies are kept in the O'Toole Library Ready Reference section. Full profilies from Hoover are also available on Lexis-Nexis and on as links on ABI Inform. Factiva also carries profiles from Hoover.
  • KellySearch The Kelly Directories list "150,000 UK companies classified under 110,000 product headings."
  • Kompass locate "1.6 million companies 23 million key product and service references 3.2 million executive names 744 000 trade and brand names 50 000 Kompass classification codes in over 70 countries." SPC does not have a subscription for full acccess to this database, so you may only get brief listings.
  • Mbendi Informaton on African companies, industries, economic, business, and tax data on individual countries, import and export leads, and stock exchanges. An excellent site, full of information on Africa.
  • Mergent Industrial Manual and News Reports Weekly news of corporate sales, taxes, income, and changes to bond ratings from Mergent, formerly Moody's.
  • NASD.Com Formerly the National Association of Security Dealers and, until 2000, owners of Nasdq, NASD maintains information on securities investing and oversees securities brokers and dealers. You will find a searchable directory of brokers and securities companies at this site, along with other useful information on the industry.
  • NASDAQ Information on over 5000 companies listed on the NASDAQ exchange,including Reuters business news, stock quotes and graphs.
  • National Trade Databank (NTDB) Detailed foreign trade data from Stat-USA, the Federal government's Web site for economic information.The Library has four accounts and they are only available on the database workstations in the O'Toole Library. Click here for a password to access it from other computers.
  • New Jersey Business Gateway Search a business name, UCC debtor name, or trade name registered with the New Jersey Treasurer. There is a fee for a full report.
  • New York State Division of Corporations Search this New York State Corporation and Business Entity Database for business or not-for-profit corporations.
  • New York Stock Exchange Summary of current and historical activity on Wall Street, links to NYSE member web pages
  • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Information on the NAICS, the replacement to the SIC codes that have been used to classify industries and services.
  • PR Newswire Corporate and industry press releases and company news.
  • Rapid Research Corporate overview, current and 5-year financials on over 8,000 stocks, and a "stock screener" that allows screening of exchanges or industries by over 27 fundamental criteria.
  • SECINFO.Com Search SEC filings by personal name, company, ZIP code. Very useful to see if an individual ia an officer in more than one company.
  • Securities Industry Association Information and data on the industry are available on this site.
  • SIBL The Science, Business and Industry Library of the New York Public Library, at 34th Street and Madison Avenue, 20 minutes from Journal Square. Look for their guides to business research and other Internet links.
  • SmartMoney.Com from Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal, SmartMoney provides real-time quotes, a wide array of in-depth charts, reports, and tools, and a sizable archive of news articles. Outstanding in its provision of full financial data, comparative competitor charting, insider trades, and key ratios. This is also a good stop for personal finance information and calculators. Their Map of the Market is a steller example of using graphics to depict current market activity. Highly recommended.
  • STAT-USA current and historical economic and financial data and access to GLOBUS and the National Trade Databank (NTDB, all from the US Department of Commerce. The Library has four accounts and they are only available on the database workstations in the O'Toole Library. Click here for a password to access it from other computers.
  • State and Local Government on the Net links to other states and many county and city governments, tribal governments and territories.
  • Stock Research Sites on the Web From the Foster Business Library of the University of Washington, this site maintains a comparative database of Internet sites that track stocks and companies and is an excellent place to find which sites provide particular types of data, such as beta, historical data, earnings estimates, etc.
  • Stores Online an online magazine from the National Retail Federation provides lists of top 100 retailers, top speciality stores, and top global retailers.
  • ThomasNet - ThomasNet combines the Thomas Register and Thomas Regional directories (see below), and has tons of new features including CAD drawings which are free to download, news, forums and more. 
    Thomas Regional Directories Lists over 480,000 manufacturers, distributors and service companies in 19 key U.S. industrial markets and has 4,500 product/service categories. You can search by region, type, trademark or look for minority or woman-owned companies.
    Thomas Register of American Manufacturers Search by products or companies for over 155,000 American and Canadian firms. Thomas Register of European Manufacturers (TREM) list over 140,000 industrial suppliers in Austria, Finland, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
  • Thomas Food Industry Register : Online buying guide to U.S. & Canadian suppliers of food products ingredients, equipment & supplies "Over 30,000 U.S. and Canadian suppliers of food products, ingredients, equipment, and supplies listed under 6,000 product categories," along with news on trade shows, government resources, and market trends."
  • Top 50 Banks current and detailed information from the Federal Reserve.
  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office: Trademark Information search trademarks and brand names. Search will return both live and dead trademarks and information on the trademark owner, date of first use and a copy of the design, if any was filed.
  • Wall Street Research Current (20 min. delay) stock quotes, historical charts, news from PR Newswire, industry surveys and more. An excellent source for U.S. and Canadian company information.
  • World Federation of Exchanges Statistics and studies of all of the world's major stock exchanges
  • World'Vest Base provides 3 years of detailed financial data on over 12,000 non-US companies in 70 countries. They can provide more detailed information on a subscription basis, including full 10-year financials.
  • Wright Research Stock market information on over 18,000 worldwide companies, along with a currency converter that converts tabular data.
