  • Amnesty International "AI's mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights." Amnesty International publishes a detailed annual report and special reports covering abuses in war-torn or occupied regions, and within nations.
  • Assignment Calculator This very helpful site from the University of Minnesota lets you create a timeline of activities that are necessary to write a research paper and provides definitions, tutorials, research guides, and other helpful aides.
  • Center on Religion and Democracy Funded in part by the Pew Foundation, this site at the University of Virgina has full text documents from Machiavelli and Calvin, essays and books from Harriet Beecher Stowe, including her essay on Sojourner Truth. the Magna Carta and the the Constitution of the Iroquois Nation are also available here.
  • CIA World Fact Book Historical, political and economic information on countries of the world.
  • Department of State Reports on Human Rights Practices In depth reports from 60 countries on current conditions on human rights, law and justice.
  • Digital Atlas of New York City Dr. William A. Bowen of the Department of Geography at California State University, Northridge, has created a demographic atlas of NYC that shows population and race, ancestry, income and poverty, adult educational attainment, household types, and commuters.
  • Elections 2004 Links to election materials, party headquarters, candidate statements, and statistics, from the University of Michigan.
  • Euroguide Developed by the Essex County Libraries in England, this site provides 60 subject areas for the exploration of European Union activities. It also has a very good guide to British anti-EU press stories.
  • Europa The European Union Online
  • FirstGov.gov - Official website for searching the U.S. Government Search or follow subject links to Federal government information. This site is the easiest way to find government information and online publications and data.
  • Foreign Media Reaction The U.S. Department of State produces a daily summary of foreign media opinion taken from editorials in major international newspapers, magazines and broadcast media.
  • Government Views of Iraq This site, compilied by the City College of New York, has almost 200 pages of information about Iraq, most from the U.S. government but also from the UN and abroad.
  • GPO Access Search full texts of Congressional Bills, Congressional Record, Federal Register, GAO Reports, House Rules, current U.S. Government Manual
  • Hoover Institute The Hoover Institute maintains an extensive library and archive of materials on politics, economics, and society and publishes substantial research papers and books, many of which can be found at this site.
  • House of Commons Library Research Papers Like the Library of Congress, the Library of the British House of Commons provides impartial research reports to members of the House. Many of those reports, going back to 1998,are available on this site.
  • ICPSR Web Site The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. Social science data archives: social surveys, health surveys, historical data.
  • ILO - The International Labour Organization Information on international labor standards, databases of labor statistics, and links to resources in labor law, education and training
  • InfoNation This United Nations site allows you to select two or more countries and compare social, demographic and economic data.
  • International Data Base Demographic data from 227 countries compiled by the US Census Bureau. The data go back to 1950 and have projections to 2050.
  • Library of Congress Country Studies This series covers 100 countries and concentrates more on the social aspectes of each country than does the CIA series above. You can also do key-word searching across all of the volumes, finding information on music, for example, in many countries. Some of the volumes are out of date but new volumes are being added and the new additions now contain maps and illustrations.
  • M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence Institute devoted to promoting Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence.
  • Middle East Report Published by the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP), this site has in-depth studies of Middle East politics and society.
  • National Security Archive "combines a unique range of functions in one non governmental, non-profit institution. The Archive is simultaneously a research institute on international affairs, a library and archive of declassified U.S. documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, a public interest law firm defending and expanding public access to government information through the FOIA, and an indexer and publisher of the documents in books, microfiche, and electronic formats. The Archive's approximately $2.3 million yearly budget comes from publication revenues and from private philanthropists such as the Carnegie Corporation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Ford Foundation. As a matter of policy, the Archive receives no government funding." You will find documents on this site relating to Nixon, Castro and Kennedy, and American support of Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war.
  • New York Times Political Points "A Selective Guide to Political Sites on the Internet." Especially good for links to advocacy and opinion groups.
  • Oyez: U.S. Supreme Court Multimedia MP3 audio files of Supreme Court cases, Court daybook, biographies of justices.

  • Roman Law Resources Compiled by Dr. Ernest Metzger, Faculty of Law, University of Aberdeen, this site provides texts and discussions, in English and German, along with original sources.
  • State and Local Government on the Net links to other states and many county and city governments, tribal governments and territories.
  • Thomas: Legislative Information from the Library of Congress A searchable site prepared by the Library of Congress containing information on the legislative process as well as full text publications such as: Bill Summary & Status, Bill Text, Public Laws by Law Number, Votes, Congressional Record, Committee Information.
  • U.S. Courts Links to news and statistical data on the Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, U.S. District Courts, and U.S. Bankruptcy Courts.
  • United Nations The United Nations was established on 24 October 1945 by 51 countries committed to preserving peace through international cooperation and collective security.
  • United Nations Scholar's Workstation "developed by the Yale University Library and the Social Science Statistical Laboratory, is a collection of texts, finding aids, data sets, maps, and pointers to print and electronic information. Subject coverage includes disarmament, economic and social development, environment, human rights, international relations, international trade, peacekeeping, and population and demography."
  • World Statesmen is an "encyclopedia of nations, colonies, international and religious organizations, and other polities mostly since the year 1700." It also includes background information on terrorist groups and chronological lists of mayors of U.S. cities: for New York City it also includes the boroughs and their flags.
