Presented by KPMG LLP's Strategic Relocation and Expansion Services practice, this site allows you to compare the costs of doing business in various US and international locations and industries. If you wanted to move your back-office operations, for example, you would find that Canada is less expensive the back-office operations are in the US are much lower than in Germany or Japan. Interactive tables give a quick view and PDF reports provide greater detail.
  • Core Business Journals A subject list of major business journals, linked to the databases in which they are carried.
  • Core Competencies for Business Reference: International Business Excellent site from the Business Reference and Services Section of the American Library Association. Question and answer format introduces key terms and key sources for locating information.
  • Corporateinformation This is a metasite that provides annotated links to other sites that have data on public and private companies. You can select links to sites in the US, Europe, Asia, or Latin America. It also provides explanations of foreign corporate terms and abbreviations. Search by country and you can start with a list of the top ten companies and links to regional guides.
  • Country Background Notes Country Backgound Notes are prepared annually by U.S. embassies. At this site at the State Department you will find the current guide and links to previous guides. Not all guides are updated each year, so you may need to download the country information you need from their archive.
  • Country Commercial Guides The Guides "are prepared by US Embassy Staff once a year and contain information on the business and economic situation of foreign countries and the political climate as it affects U.S. business. Each CCG contains the same chapters, and an appendix, which include topics such as marketing, trade regulations, investment climate, and business travel." This site lets you search the Guides and other market research reports.
  • Customs Rulings Online Search System (CROSS) Search customs rulings from the recently renamed Customs and Border Protection agency of the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Dialogue with Business a "one stop shop" for information from the European Community on doing business with the European Union.
  • Doing Business The World Bank Group's Doing Business database "provides indicators of the cost of doing business by identifying specific regulations that enhance or constrain business investment, productivity, and growth." Topics covered include:Credit Markets, Entry Regulations, Bankruptcy, Contract Enforcement, and Labor Regulations.
  • Dynamic Document Creation This page at Strategis, sponsored by Statistics Canada and the U.S. Department of Commerce lets you select specific items from either the CIA World Factbook, International Business Practices Documents, Market Research Reports, or Country Commercial Guides and prepare a custom report. This is a great boon if you need only a brief, selected report and do not need the entire Guide or Report.
  • Economic Research Service (ERS) Briefing Rooms These research reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture cover various products (corn, hogs) or countries that are major export/import partners (China, Brazil). An excellent source for trade data and agricultural research.
  • Economist Country Briefings News,background information and economic data from the Economist magazine.
  • EURIDILE - Le Registre National du Commerce et des Sociétés - RNCS Official directory of over 3.2 million French companies. Provides basic information for free and financial data for a fee.
  • Euromoney World Link International finance. Registration is required
  • Europages Europages lets you search by company name, product, or industry group and returns matching lists of companies with addresses and, in some cases, gross sales or workforce size. It provides links to company web pages and catalogs if the company has signed on to be listed in Europages.
  • European Economic Outlook from PriceWaterhouseCooper.
  • European Trade Associations Links to European tade association federations and their members. A keyword search is available using the "Coneccs" link on the page.
  • Eurostat European Union economic and social data, some of it updated daily
  • Expedia Quick Maps for US, Canada, Mexico, Europe; topographic maps of the world.
  • Export.Gov Market Research The Country Commercial Guides can be found here, along with Country & Industry Market Reports, Agricultural Market Research, Video Market Reports,Project Feasibility Studies, Broad Country Information, Country-specific Quick Reference, Trade Agreements & Statistics, and NIS and Central Europe Reports

  • globalEDGE Growing out of what was Michigan State University's Center for International Business Education and Research, this is probably the best directory of resources for international business and trade on the Internet and the source of many of the links on this page.
  • Going Global Career Guides This series of guides to finding jobs abroad presents a cultural proflile of each country, job search resources, visa and financial advice, and employment trends. Guides are available for the US, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, China, Hong Kong, Brazil, Belgium and many others. The guides are available as part of ABI/INFORM. This link will take you to ABI and show the cultural advice sections of several countries. You can do your own search in ABI for "Going Global Career Guides" and country name.

  • ILO - The International Labour Organization Information on international labor standards, databases of labor statistics, and links to resources in labor law, education and training
  • InfoNation This United Nations site allows you to select two or more countries and compare social, demographic and economic data.
  • Interactive Tariff and Trade DataWeb From the The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC):" Data are available for years 1989 through 2001 on a monthly, quarterly, annual, or year-to-date basis and can be retrieved in a number of classification systems, including the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), or the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Material is available on U.S. trade under special tariff preference programs or by country or country group. Pre-defined reports are also available by geographic region, partner country, and production sharing provisions (under which goods are exported for processing abroad and later returned to the United States). Current information on U.S. tariffs, which is maintained and published by the ITC as one of its statutory responsibilities, can be accessed via the DataWeb, where it can also be linked to relevant and current trade data."

SPC does not have a subscription for full acccess to this database, so you may only get brief listings.
  • Latinvestor News and information on business in Latin America.
  • Martindale's Calculators On-Line Center Links to over 1,800 calculators: the usual scientific, math, and financial calculators, but also calculators for dates, astrology, wine, odors, car pricing, traffic, event hosting... if you need to calculate something you will find it here.
  • Mbendi Informaton on African companies, industries, economic, business, and tax data on individual countries, import and export leads, and stock exchanges. An excellent site, full of information on Africa.
  • McKinsey Global Institute In-depth reports on offshoring, foreign investment, and other topics prepared by this major consulting company. Free registration is required.
  • METI Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (formerly MITI). Press releases, news and statistics.
  • MSI Doing Buiness In… MacIntyre Sträter International (MSI) guides have fast facts, an economic overview, and links to sites that deal with business culture, taxation, accounting, and business conditions.
  • Nation Master Over 300 statistical sets for countries of the world. It has some quirks and you may need to use the drop-down box for all countries if your target does not show up in the region you expect, but it does give basis statistics and their sources.
  • National Accounts Statistics database This United Nations database "contains a complete and consistent set of time series from 1970 onwards of main national accounts aggregates for all UN Members States and all other countries and areas in the world."   • National Trade Databank (NTDB) Detailed foreign trade data from Stat-USA, the Federal government's Web site for economic information.The Library has four accounts and they are only available on the database workstations in the O'Toole Library.   • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Information on the NAICS, the replacement to the SIC codes that have been used to classify industries and services.
  • Out-Law.Com From Masons, a legal firm based in the UK, Out-Law provides information based on UK, EU, and Hong Kong laws on "IT, e-commerce, privacy, intellectual property, software, telecoms, security, cybercrime, tax, employment, companies."
  • POPLINE "the world's largest bibliographic database of family planning and related health and development issues"
  • Population Index "Population Index is the primary reference tool to the world's population literature. It presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics. This website provides a searchable and browsable database containing 46,035 abstracts of demographic literature published in Population Index in the period 1986-2000."
  • Portals to the World This portal from the Library of Congress provides selected links to cultural, government, business, and educational sites for hundred of countries.
  • Salomon Smith Barney Guide to World Equity Markets financial information on 81 countries, updated annually.
  • SchedNet Air and sea schedules, rates, cargo tracking, logistic search service, links to agents, freight rates, shipping arrivals and departures, and shipping news are all available from this site.
  • STAT-USA current and historical economic and financial data and access to GLOBUS and the National Trade Databank (NTDB, all from the US Department of Commerce.   • Strategis Trade data from Statistics Canada and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  • Thomas Global Register from Thomas Publishing provides information on "500,000 industrial suppliers, organized by 10,500 industrial product classifications, in 9 languages and from 26 countries." Registration is free but you have to agree to accept e-mail ads in return.
  • Thomas Register of European Manufacturers (TREM) list over 140,000 industrial suppliers in Austria, Finland, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
  • Time and Date.Com Find out the current time anywhere in the world, use a time zone meeting planner to schedule international conference calls, create local calendars.
  • Times 100 UK Case studies and marketing theory, featuring 100 major companies in the UK.
  • Trade Agreements Database & Archive Database of 164 bilateral and regional free trade and customs union agreements at Dartmouth College
  • Trade Association Directory A directory of trade associations in the United Kingdom
  • Trade Partners the UK government site for import/export information.
  • Trade Statistics from the Office of Trade and Economic Analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  • Tradepoint This site from the World Trade Point Federation, created by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development is still developing and the amount and quality of information varies as each trade point contributes its pages. However, the individual country pages (under Market Point) do have much useful information.
  • Tradeport a non-profit organization that offers many other tools for foreign trade, including the Country Commercial Guides and other market research reports in their Country Library. This site has not been updated in some time but still has useful information.
  • U.S. Imports/Exports History: 1992-1996 seachable trade statistics from from the Census Bureau and the Government Information Sharing Project at Oregon State University Information Services.
  • U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services Trade and other data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis
  • U.S. International Transactions Accounts Data Detailed, interactive tables from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
  • UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics From the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, this handbook contains data on trade in goods and services, foreign direct investment, commodity prices, and TRAINS(Trade Analysis Information System) on trade controls. Free registration is required.
  • United Nations Food and Agriculture Agency (FAO) Statistical data and reports on commodities, food stocks, production, imports and exports. Text is available in French, Spanish, or Arabic.
  • United States Department of Engergy Country Analysis Briefs excellent background on oil, gas, coal, and other energy production and consumption, along with major environmental issues.
  • United States Government Export Portal from the US Department of State has links to forms, tax information, the Basic Guide to Exporting and current news.
  • United States Trade Internet System searchable data from the US Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) on US exports and imports of agricultural, fishery, and forestry products.
  • Universal Currency Converter This English/French/Sweedish site from Xenon Labs lets you convert foreign currency at current exchange rates

  • World Federation of Exchanges Statistics and studies of all of the world's major stock exchanges

  • Wright Research Stock market information on over 18,000 worldwide companies, along with a currency converter that converts tabular data.
