Mission of the Libraries

The mission of the Libraries of Saint Peter's College is to support the instructional program and goals of the College and to ensure that every patron is an effective user of information and ideas. This mission is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials, by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in using information and ideas, and by working to meet the individual needs of patrons to become discriminating users of ideas, information and technology, thus contributing to lifelong independent learning.

Borrowing

STUDENT LOAN PERIOD
Most of the books in the collection circulate for a period of 30 days or until the end of the current semester, whichever is the shortest. It is up to you to be aware of this date and to return your books on time. Providing there are no outstanding requests for holds or recalls on the material, loans may be renewed twice. If there are two or more hold requests placed on an item the maximum loan period will be shortened to seven days. All renewals and returns should be made in person. Library users are asked to remain at the Circulation Desk until all loan and/or return procedures are completed. Reference works and periodicals are not available for circulation. A maximum of 12 books may be borrowed at any one time. Loans to selected high school scholar students are restricted to a maximum of two books at any one time.

FACULTY LOANS
Saint Peter's College faculty may borrow books for a period of one semester, renewable up to a maximum of two consecutive semesters. Faculty may borrow reference works or periodicals for overnight or weekend use only. Loans to faculty are normally limited to a maximum of 25 books at any one time.

Computer Use

Priority is given to students needing to do classwork assignments, word processing, and Internet research and reference. Please do not leave any files on the system. Be considerate of others in your use of this equipment.

ALL WORK & PRINTING MUST BE COMPLETED 15 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING

The Library is not responsible for instruction in the use of any software packages. The Librarians will provide instruction in the reference and research materials provided on the CD-ROM network, the online catalog and the Internet.  Instruction in word processing and other applications is available in the CALL Center in Pope Hall and in the Academic Computing Center in Loyola Hall.

What is displayed on a screen in a public area may be offensive to others and users are expected to be sensitive to that fact. If an image or text is purposely displayed for the purpose of harassment, a user could be disciplined under the College's code of conduct.

Interlibrary Loan

The Library will be pleased to obtain books and periodical articles from other libraries for all Saint Peter's students, faculty and staff. Please pick up a form to fill out at the reference desk. Forms must contain as much bibliographic information as possible. Most requests can be filled within a period of 10-21 days. If the library from which the request is made cannot provide the needed item, another library must be contacted, and the process will take longer. The loan period will be stipulated by the lending library.

Please note that some libraries charge photocopying or other fees for inter-library loans. In such cases the Library will request that the fees be paid by the requestor.

PATRONS ASSUME RESPONSIBLITY for all borrowed books and materials.

Photocopying

Coin-operated photocopying machines (10 cents/copy at Jersey City, 20 cents at Englewood Cliffs) are available for your use, subject to copyright guidelines. At the O'Toole Library copiers are located to the left of the Library Workstations at the back of the first floor. A coin changer is located near the Circulation Desk and VendaCards in $5.00 denominations may be purchased at the Desk. Microform reader/printers are available in the Reference Room. The charge is 10 cents/copy, 20 cents at Englewood Cliffs. There is no charge for copies of citations and full-text articles from CD-ROM databases but users must bring their own paper or use paper from the re-cycled copies kept near the workstations. Paper may also be purchased at the Circulation Desk for 50 cents per packet of 25 sheets.

Printing

There are no charges for printing but in order to conserve paper and toner be aware of what you are printing and considerate of other students.  Please avoid printing articles or other documents in excess of 20 pages, if you do not need the entire articles or document ask a librarian how to print a selection.

The computer lab is for the use of the Campus community for word processing, class assignments and access to the campus network and the Internet. It may also be used for leisure, as long as no one else needs a computer for class work.  Users must be familiar with the application they are running. The Library will only provide assistance in handling minor problems such as logging in, paper jams, or program selection.

Reference Services

Librarians are available to help you with any questions that you might have in identifying and locating needed materials or finding your way around the collections, the on-line catalog, and the facility. Feel free to seek assistance from any of the librarians or speak to the Library Director about your needs or concerns. Information literacy skills are taught in conjunction with the faculty from the English Department as well as in a number of other courses upon request from an instructor. The Library staff has prepared a series of Library Guides that list selected materials that can assist you with your research. The Library Guides focus on such areas as economics, mathematics, and business. They also deal with the use of specific kinds of reference works, such as indexes and abstracts. Many of the guides are also available via the Library Web site.

While the staff strives to provide personal service, the level of activity at the reference desk determines the amount of time the librarian can devote to each patron. At busy times the reference staff may only be able to provide no more than 15 minutes of assistance to any one patron. For complex and time- consuming reference requests it may sometimes be necessary to provide the information at a later time. In most cases this will be done within 48 hours. While students are expected to conduct their own research as part of their educational experience, the reference staff will guide them in the process by providing individual instruction in the use of bibliographic resources and informational tools. Formal bibliographic instruction for groups is also available.

Bibliographic Instruction

Reference Librarians give instruction in how to do research using library resources to members of the college community. We can present classes on basic research or on any needed subject when given a week's notice. We also assist teachers in directing classes in guided research in the library. Please call Thomas Kenny, Mark Graceffo, Ilona Macnamara or Kerry Falloon at the reference desk at 201-915-9392 to plan a class.  For Englewood Cliffs please call Mary Ellen Valverde at 201-985-2879.
