GENERAL INFORMATION on Study Abroad

WHY STUDY ABROAD?

The benefits of a Study Abroad experience are wide-ranging and everlasting. Academically, Study Abroad provides students with opportunities to broaden awareness of international issues, better understand global interdependence, gain an international perspective in their major, and, in some cases, develop proficiency in another language. From a cultural perspective, students develop valuable insight into other cultures while learning how to interact with people from different backgrounds. Study Abroad can also be a major step in one's career development. Students can learn how international organizations function and gain knowledge of economic and political issues affecting organizations. On a personal level, a study abroad experience provides time for self-reflection, examination of goals, and development of confidence, maturity and adaptability.

WHO CAN STUDY ABROAD?

Students in good academic standing (usually 2.75 GPA or better) and who have completed their freshman year, may enroll in a Study Abroad Program. Typically a semester or year abroad is taken in junior year. Since students may participate in Study Abroad during the summer, it is possible to have more than one Study Abroad experience. The maximum number of credits that can be earned for Study Abroad is thirty.

HOW TO STUDY ABROAD?

All applications and Study Abroad Programs must be reviewed with the Director, Wendy Garay, wgaray@spc.edu. We, along with other interested faculty and the host institution, want you to have the best academic and cultural experience while away. However, study abroad requires significant research on your part. The following is one way to begin your process.

What subjects do you want to study?
First, review your degree audit; determine what subjects remain for you to complete. Discuss with your advisor your plans to take courses abroad. Look for colleges abroad that offer the courses you want to pursue.

Where do you want study?
Visit the following websites for ideas:

How will you finance your study-travel abroad?
ISEP participants may be able to use their current financial aid package. Student loans are available for College-approved programs. Visit www.StudyAbroadFunding.org

When is the best time to study abroad?
Ask your advisor and those who support your education. You may find a faculty-led trip of 7-14 days during January or Spring Break is the best option. Other programs are a semester or year long. Attend an information session on Study Abroad. Notices will be posted electronically and on bulletin boards. Contact the Director to discuss programs, processes, and to receive help with applications.
