ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (Grades Kindergarten to 5th)

All Elementary Education students who wish to receive a State of New Jersey Teaching Certificate

(K – 5) are also required to complete an academic major chosen from those offered by the college in the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, science, or technology disciplines. The chosen major must be the full academic major offered by an academic department or it may be a multi- or inter-disciplinary major such as American Studies or a composite major. Students must complete a Double Major form which is available in the Registrar’s office. Elementary Education students must complete the following courses. Students who wish to take a course out of sequence should check with their departmental advisor.

Sophomore Year

  • Ed 160 Aims of American Education (3)
  • Ed 170 Child Psychology (3)
  • Ed 490 Sophomore Field Experience (1)

Junior Year

  • Ed 301 Tests and Measurements (3)
  • Ee 206 Reading in the Elementary School (3)
  • Ee 204 Language Arts in the Elementary School (3)
  • Ee 212 Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School (3)*
  • Ee 214 Teaching Science in the Elementary School (3)*
  • Ed 491 Junior Field Experience (1)

Senior Year

  • Ee 202 Elementary Curriculum (3)
  • Ed 493 Practicum in Reading (3)
  • Ed 495 Student Teaching: Elementary (8)

MIDDLE SCHOOL CERTIFICATION(S) (Grades 5 to 8)

All Elementary Education students who wish to receive a middle school teaching certificate(s) are required to follow the educational sequence outlined above for Elementary Education majors and complete an academic major chosen from those offered by the college in the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, science, or technology disciplines. The chosen major must be the full academic major offered by an academic department or it may be a multi- or inter-disciplinary major such as American Studies or a composite major. Students are required to take the sequence(s) of courses for the desired certification(s) as outlined below. This sequence(s) may be part of the academic major or in addition to the academic major.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES (Grades 5 – 8)

Elementary education majors who are eligible for a K – 5 certificate, may also receive a middle school certificate in social studies by completing the following sequence of courses. Elementary education majors will complete the following 12 credits as part of their core: Hs 121, Hs 122 and 6 credits from among Po 100, Ec 101, So 121 and Ur 151. In addition, students must complete Hs 231 and Hs 232 and choose 3-credits from the following: Hs 240, Hs 348, Hs 427, Hs 428, Hs 452, Hs 464, Hs 468, Hs 469, Hs 470, Hs 481 and Hs 488.

Note: Elementary education students who choose a second, academic major in history or secondary education students who major in history and receive a secondary social studies certificate may teach social studies in both high school and middle school with their secondary certification. A separate middle school certificate is not required. Elementary education majors who choose a second, academic major in American Studies can fulfill these requirements as part of their major. American Studies majors can fulfill both middle school social studies and middle school English as part of their major. Consult with your advisor.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH (Grades 5 – 8)

Elementary education majors who are eligible for a K – 5 certificate, may also receive a middle school certificate in English by completing the following sequence of courses. Elementary education majors will complete the following 6 credits as part of their core: El 123 and El 134. They will also take Ee 204 as part of their elementary education major. In addition, students must choose 6-credits from the following: El 347, El 348, El 351, El 353, El 357, El 359, El 416 and El 423.

Note: Elementary education students who choose a second, academic major in English or secondary education students who major in English and receive a secondary English certificate may teach English in both high school and middle school with their secondary certification. A separate middle school certificate is not required. Elementary education majors who choose a second, academic major in American Studies can fulfill these requirements as part of their major. American Studies majors can fulfill both middle school social studies and middle school English as part of their major. Consult with your advisor.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHEMATICS (Grades 5 – 8)

Elementary education majors who are eligible for a K – 5 certificate, may also receive a middle school certificate in mathematics by completing the following sequence of courses. Elementary education majors will complete 6 – 8 credits of the following courses as part of their core requirements: Ma 102-103, Ma 105-106, Ma 108-109, Ma 123-134 or Ma 143-144. They will also take 3 credits of Ee 212 as part of their elementary education major. (Students who took Ee 212 for 2-credits should consult with their advisor). In addition, students must complete any 6-credits of mathematics courses at 200 level or higher.

Note: Elementary education students who choose a second, academic major in mathematics or secondary education students who major in mathematics and receive a secondary mathematics certificate may teach mathematics in both high school and middle school with their secondary certification. A separate middle school certificate is not required.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE (Grades 5 – 8)

Elementary education majors who are eligible for a K – 5 certificate, may also receive a middle school certificate in science by completing the following sequence of courses. Elementary education majors will complete 6-credits of core by taking Ns 110 and one course from the following: Bi 122, Bi 124, Bi 125, Bi 126, Bi 127, Bi 129, Bi 130, Bi/Ch 237, Ch 100, Ch 123, Ch 238, Pc 110 and Pc 360 They will also take 3-credits of Ee 214 as part of their elementary education major. (Students who took Ee 214 for 2 credits should consult with their advisor). In addition, students must complete 6-credits of science courses at the 200 level or higher, chosen from biology, chemistry or physics

Note: Elementary education students who choose a second, academic major in biology, chemistry or physics or secondary education students who major in one of these fields and receive a secondary science certificate may teach science in both high school and middle school with their secondary certification. A separate middle school certificate is not required.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

Since for secondary education students the academic major is also specific preparation for the subject teaching certificate, the student must choose an academic major that is taught at the high school level. In addition to an advisor from the department of the academic major, all secondary education minors must confer with a professor in the Education Department and declare secondary education as a minor. Secondary education minors must complete the following 25 credits:

Academic Courses (15 credits)

  • Ed 160 Aims of American Education (3)
  • Ed 203 Educational Psychology (3) or with permission, Ed 170 Child Psychology (3)
  • Se 400 Principles & Techniques of Teaching in Secondary Schools (3)
  • Se 370 Improvement of Reading in the Secondary School (3)
  • Se 408 High School Curriculum Organization (3)

Field Experience Courses (10 credits)

  • Ed 490 Sophomore Field Experience (1)
  • Ed 491 Junior Field Experience (1)
  • Se 495 Student Teaching: Secondary (8)
