Meet the Staff

Mary Sue Callan-Farley, Director of Campus Ministry, mcallanfarley@spc.edu
What I love most about Saint Peter’s is its people. Everyday is a learning experience. We laugh a lot in the office. I think Saint Peter’s College prepares its students in a way other campuses cannot, because it welcomes the world into the classroom and into a busy co-curricular life. People of many religious traditions and cultures comprise the community that gathers through Campus Ministry programs. In an era when we urgently need to understand each other to live cooperatively, our campus is a place of hope.

I received my bachelor’s degree from University of Notre Dame and my master’s from Maryknoll School of Theology. Before coming to Saint Peter’s I served campus ministries at an urban Newman Center at a large private university; a historic private women’s college; and a small Catholic college. I have been married for 24 years and have four children ages 11 through 21.

Erich Berkowitz Sekel, Associate Director of Campus Ministry for Community Service, esekel@spc.edu

Born and raised in Jersey City, I went to school locally at Our lady of Victories Grammar School and Saint Peter’s Prep high school.  I received a Bachelor’s in Classical Civilizations from Boston University, and a Master’s in Secondary Ed. From Seton Hall U.  I love Notre Dame football, my hat (whose name is Barbara), and my dog, Cleopatra. I also loves traditional Irish Folk music, 80s Music, and Tupac.  I am excited to get started working in the surrounding communities helping others out.  I challenge every student to do one project or day of service with me this year.  I guarantee by the end, you will see how important it is to serve.  Let’s get started.

Brian Carreira, Assistant Director of Campus Ministry for Retreats and Spiritual Life, bcarreira@spc.edu

I am excited to be a part of Saint Peter's Campus Ministry team.  In our highly interconnected world, it is increasingly important to take time to reflect, assess, and process how  we become the people we are called to be.  I look forward to participating in some of your journeys of discernment during your life here at Saint Peter's.  I enjoy a good walk or a bike ride, cooking and sharing meals, and comedies.  I also practice Goju Ryu karate.

Before coming to Saint Peter's, I was a long-time Brooklyn resident and am originally from Connecticut.  I was awarded a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, have worked as a high school teacher in the Bronx, served as a hospital chaplain and homeless outreach advocate in Manhattan, and lived in Managua, Nicaragua where I taught English.  Prior to this, I worked for some years in banking and finance.  My bachelor's is from the University of Maryland.

Jeff Peak, Campus Minister for Community Service, jpeak@spc.edu

Though this is my first year at St. Peter's College, in the short time that I've been here, I already feel very much at home.  There is such an energy on campus and it seems that Campus Ministry is right at the center of it as students seek to live out the service of their faith in the quest for the promotion of justice.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, did both my undergraduate work in journalism and graduate studies in ministry at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and spent a year of service with Amate House working with an after-school program on Chicago's South Side.  I enjoy swimming, reading, photography, and love it when students stop by my office to say hello.

Fr. Rocco Danzi, S.J., Chaplain, rdanzi@spc.edu

Fr. Rocco Danzi, SJ (NYK) grew up in Woodbury, NJ, part of the Diocese of Camden. He attended St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia where he first encountered the Jesuits. After graduating from St. Joe’s with a BA in history, Fr. Danzi returned to his home diocese and taught elementary school there for three years. He then journeyed to Westchester, NY, where he taught at Iona Prep with the Congregation of Christian Brothers. This was a time of intense discernment for Fr. Danzi, and thanks to the example and encouragement of the Brothers, he completed a Master's Degree in Education at Iona College. He soon thereafter joined the Associates Program of the New York Province Vocation Office, which would lead to a new chapter in Fr. Danzi’s life.

In 1989, Fr. Danzi was accepted into the Jesuit Novitiate at St. Andrew's Hall in Syracuse, NY and soon found himself falling in love with pastoral work among urban youth. After completing his philosophy studies at Ciszek Hall, Fordham University in 1993, he was assigned to the Caribbean/West Indian Parish of St. Ignatius in Brooklyn, where he worked for three years with the youth of Crown Heights.
Fr. Danzi began his theology studies at Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA in 1996 and continued to do pastoral ministry among Haitian youth on weekends. During the summers of theology he journeyed to Haiti to learn the language and to deepen his sense of the culture.

Fr. Danzi was ordained in 2000 and missioned as a Jesuit priest to serve once again at St. Ignatius Parish, Brooklyn. He remained there as pastor and superior until 2006 when the Society of Jesus called him to Tertianship. His Tertianship took him back to New England and also back to one of the poorest and least developed areas of Haiti for a five month experiment in a new school modeled on the Fe y Alegría Jesuit system of insertion schools.

Upon completion of his Tertianship, Fr. Danzi was asked to join the New York Province Vocations Office team to work with Br. Chris Derby, SJ and Wendell Laurent. He traveled to the different dioceses in the New York Province, to Jesuit and non-Jesuit institutions alike, to share with youth and young adults the good news of how God has great desires for them and is calling them to ministry in the Church.

Fr. Danzi is now happy to call Saint Peter’s College home, as Campus Ministry Chaplain. He is here to welcome everyone and offer his time and support to all.

Susanta Mozumder, Work Study

Hello to you my friend to be.  I’m Susanta, a.k.a. Sushi. I’m from Jersey City, right up by JSQ. I’m a sophomore at SPC and a double major in education and history. I am hoping to be a history teacher/professor some day.  Working in Campus Ministry has been a unique and enriching experience for me. Although I haven’t been working very long, I feel as if I've known everyone here for a lifetime. Being involved in Campus Ministry has given me an in- depth look into the different faiths of the world. Bringing faiths together is something I always like to do. I feel that if the different faiths of the world could come together the world would be a better place. The Campus Ministry team has been great to me. They love what they do, and it catches on very quickly when you see how everyone here is enjoying themselves. The staff here at Campus Ministry is very friendly and welcomes everyone with a friendly hello.  Come stop by and we can have a pleasant conversation.

Fr. Vincent Sullivan, Jesuit Collaborator for Campus Ministry

Father Sullivan entered the Society of Jesus after graduation from high school.  Spiritual, administrative, and pastoral concerns have been the primary focus of his ministry.  The bulk of his career has been spent in parishes in New York and New Jersey.  During his tenure at Saint Peter's Church from 1996-2004, Father Sullivan was appointed rector of the Saint Peter's Prep Jesuit Community.  For the past six years, he has served as the rector at Ciszek Hall, the Community for Jesuit Scholastics in First Studies at Fordham University.

As rector of the Saint Peter's College Jesuit Community, Father Sullivan's chief role is to support the men in living their personal, communal and apostolic lives as Jesuits.  As a priest who "likes to be where the action is," he is also furthering his engagement with the College community by celebrating Mass and lending support for workshops and programs focusing on The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola.  He is also a member of the College's Board of Trustees.
