I really enjoy teaching Sociology of Film because I can use timed pieces to show what was going on in society at that time. I am the mother of a beautiful daughter who teaches at Passaic County Community College as an English professor. What I like most about SPC are the students. I hope that the college continues to grow and flourish

My main areas of research and publication are critical geopolitics, governance, and social justice associated with global migration streams. My work looks asylum seekers, refugees, and ‘non-status’ migrant groups as well as organizations that support these communities. I am currently working on an ESRC-funded project examining activism and advocacy within this sector. At present I am working on a co-edited book titled Carceral Geographies: Mobility and Agency in Spaces of Imprisonment and Detention.

I have a deep interest in urban education as it relates to women and minorities. What I like most about Saint Peter’s College is the diversity of the student body. I also like that Saint Peter’s College is located in one of the most ethnically diverse areas of Jersey City.

My interests are in community based learning as well as in urban issues relating to racial and ethnic integration, affordable housing and shared urban economic growth. What I like most about Saint Peter’s College is its small size which has allowed me to get to know the students and staff well. I also feel comfortable with our students and staff because, having grown up in the Bronx in an immigrant working class family, I can easily identify with many of them.

I have academic backgrounds in history, mathematics, urban studies, media studies, communal studies, business, and computing. Most of my current teaching is in the area of urban studies. I love to have morning coffee curled up with my iPhone or iPad reading the news. I like to read poetry and computer manuals at night.

My lack of ability in baseball has led me to a career in teaching. My academic interests include ethnicity and race, urban history, housing, the Vietnam Era and our newest minor in Anthropology, a field where I earned my Ph.D. Indeed my primary qualification for being Chair of Sociology and Urban Studies is having a Ph.D. in neither. I strongly feel that academics is useless unless it is combined with social action. But if I get that call up to the major leagues, I am gone. Joe McLaughlin was my barber but I fired him.

I focus on migration, homelessness and research methods. Besides teaching in Sociology, I am the Director of our Latin American and Latino Studies Program. I am currently working with my research methods and statistics students on the Immigrant Second Generation in New Jersey Project. I also run a variety of short-term travel courses that allow students to study globalization and everyday life in places like Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and southern Mexico. When time permits, you can find me on the dance floor, indulging in the On2 salsa scene or trying to imitate Bob Vila.
