America Reads Program
America Reads is a federal initiative that sponsors college students to serve as reading tutors for at-risk children in the local community. The goal is to have every child read on grade level by the end of the third grade. Saint Peter’s America Reads tutors serve at least two hours a week at local grammar schools, working individually with children in reading and language arts under the supervision of a teacher.
Students eligible for federal work-study may also use their award to earn their work study funds by tutoring 5-10 hours per week at a participating school.
The America Reads Program is open to all Saint Peter’s students in good academic and disciplinary standing with a minimum 2.5 GPA. After filling out the application, students attend a required orientation and two September training sessions before placement. In addition, they also attend one discussion session monthly to report on their experience.
