Jesuit Mission and Identity
“Men and Women for Others” is more than just a phrase at Saint Peter’s – it’s a way of life.
Much has changed since members of the Society of Jesus founded Saint Peter’s College in 1872. Saint Peter’s became New Jersey’s first Catholic coeducational college. The construction of residence halls transformed Saint Peter’s from a commuter to residential campus. Academic programs evolved to meet the emerging needs of society. Yet one constant remains – an education rooted in Jesuit mission and values.
Specific areas of focus within the Jesuit Mission and Identity component include:
- Fundraising for a Heritage Edition of The Saint John's Bible (completed - generously funded by an anonymous benefactor)
- Development of an Interfaith Youth Core
- Enhancement of Saint Peter Chapel (such as new chairs, kneelers and other modifications)
- Creation of Ignatian prayer book (specific to Saint Peter’s College) for students, faculty and alumni
- Acquisition of Campus Ministry/Community Service van
- Operation of St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter's College Church (as well as funding for a liturgical minister)
- Implementation of Global Outreach Programs
- Growing the Jesuit Recruitment Fund (to attract and fund new Jesuits to join the community)
- Development of faculty-based community outreach programs
-
The focus on Jesuit Mission and Identity allows Saint Peter’s to advance its dynamic interfaith community, further integrate faith and reason into campus life and encourage students to embrace a lifelong commitment to service – all so students can gain a better understanding of Ignatian values.
